mcencry clerk a its a bio job to remove the weeds there is quite a difference in th appearance of the average 5year old boy before and after his ban and the same is true of seed as it comes from the thresher and after it goes through a modern process ing plant in both cases the prin ciple is the same bathing like pro cessing removes a lot of dirt based on actual tesls 100 lbs nf thresherrun clover seed will pro bably shrink to 75 lbs when put through an ordinary fanningmill the 25 ik removed consists of chaff soil and the coarsest weed seeds but the 75 lbs left is by no means pure seed it still contains many weeds including the bad ones some of which are classified as noxious tinder the seeds act thus is where the facilities of a modern processing plant are put to good use because weeds of the same general weight shape nnl size as the clover seed cannot be removed by the farm fannmgmill without modern machinery the only way one could separate these from good seed would be to pick them out by hand and this would be quite a job with a small clover seed like alsike for instance there are about 080000 seeds to a poun i and with the larger red clove seed 272000 in a pound of hay or grass seed like tirnothy there are no less than 1134000 seeds it is certainly much quicker belter and cheaper to turn this business over to a machine the machines which do this work are highly complicated and expen sive and they use a variety of pro cesses for gummy coated weed seeds like ribgrass the clover is mixed with damp siwdust which collects the sticky weed seeds into balls which are then ejected from the screens sometimes the clover is mixim with iron dust which sticks ti certain weeds and then electric magnets draw them out sometimes special funnels are em ployed which catch weed seeds of j slghly different shapes in other cases the mixtures an soaked m brine and the difference in speci fic gravity of the clover and the weed setds permits separation its a pretty complicated business this processing of pure tested seed but it ls vital work and the very foundation of good farming good stands of grasses nnd clovers can- not iw produced from doubful or inferior seed but only from hlch grade supplies throughly tested for purity and germination and hand- lihl by reputable dealers r mr mill mr w mlimmmi vlu- ihtl hi wumbitiuk ilurlnu th wikitnl mr uiki mr jxk
