mok two the acton free press acton ontario thullsday july 24th 105z going on vacation tkbrq will bo no more editorials no more news or feature stories written no more pictures taken meetings to attend or rush jobs for e whole weekr wo feel just like a school boy prior to vacation because next week your local paper the free press will be on holidays and the plant will be closed its the one week in the whole year that your free press wont be in the mall or at the news stand on thursday afternoon there will bfi no issue on july 31st but well be back again with your local news and printing needs on august 7th so next saturday school is out for a week in ihe free press office and the staff will go hither and yon on holiday bent and the editor will not edit for a week we hope youll miss us and wo know well enjoy the change and come back refreshed to serve the community bettor failure and payment it is rather disappointing that the now assess ment system that was to avoid costly equalization appeals 1n halton has not fulfilled its original purpose it is a grim reminder of the war that was to end wars and didnt one of the strong points in adopting the new assessment plan in halton was that costly equal ization proceedings would be avoided weve lost count of the number of years that have been spent with new assessors throughout the county the revision according to standard manual and all the work entailed there is no way of finding out what theaddltional cost has been throughout ihe county in the various municipalities by in auguration of the plan but the cold fact remains that halton is now starting equalization proceedings before 1he courts and all that entails there is dissatisfac tion in many quarters and whether court pro ceedings will give satisfaction to all is something that may be hoped for but certainly cannot be promised one sure thing is that the procedure that has boon used to arrive at the amount of taxes that will be assessed will raise the amount of taxes to be paid by every taxpayer this business of making all equal becomes more complicated and costly the more it becomes in volved in itself perhaps you dear reader wont understand it all but certainly youll pay for it a start at least the opening of the new addition to acton public school this september will relieve for the present a very acute situation that has prevailed for some years in our local educational facilities but with continual growth at the same rate the relief will only be temporary many commun ities in this section have found the new additions that were planned for several years as adequate are already becoming crowded and we note in some of our exchanges that temporary classrooms are necessary in vanouiplaces in the community while the public school in acton will now be adequate for a few years there has been no provision made for the increased school attend ance in our high school where facilities are now entirely inadequate a plan that gave some promise five years ago has failed to help the situation and the public school board looking to the future has given ample nohce of their inten tion to use the present buildings for high school purposes and served notice to vacate acton has in all respects offered to cooperate in the district bujt every move becomes involved in a number of other issues which are often far removed from the educational needs there seems little use in solving the public school problem if the high school problem cannot be clarified and more progress made euilding costs are heavy but there seems little likelihood of any lowering we note this week that dundalk district high school board has re ceived tentative approval of a 330 000 expendi ture from the ontario municipal board surely a start can be made on the building program in north halton with the townships agreed on a building program to start in acton the way should be clear and agreement readily reached if the whole program is too big lets make the start in the proposal presented the dogs have a place weve nearly always agreed that a town is no place for a dog and jhatjn spite of the fact that dogs are taxed their freedom should be curtailed during the summer months weve been inclined to side with the home owner who liked beauty about the home surroundings and found his work nullified by the dogs which were just being dogs and enjoying their freedom but we must put in a word for the dogs too other animals which havent any owners to keep them in control are taking advantage of the law which keeps dogs tied up cats rabbits and yes even skunks are getting quite impudent we have two rabbits which are regular morning and night visitors in our garden they took tho lettuce crop as it came through the ground tho carrots will likely bo theirs and most everything else that they select for their food they are sc tame that if our aim was any good with a baseball wo could clip their ears off of courso shooting is not pormissable in town where a bad shot might hit the wrong oboct so far the pets arent big enough to upset the garbage cans but they are developing well the multiplier onions are likely to be outmultiplied yes the dogs at large in town in summer can cause havoc but we must admit that they kept the wild life from invading the towns its a toss up to know which is the greater nuisance and whether man should have stepped into tho problem to endeavor to make a lawful solution the good old days may have seemed better make up for holiday week with fifty twenty years ago slnca there will be no luuo of the free prn next week and twenty and fifty year ago are nlwayj columns of intercut n second column paralleling next week date follow thu week back in 1902 from the imue ef the aeton free press ef thursday july 24 ims the point to remember there is considerable discussion in this coun try at the moment to the effect that japan now that a peace treaty has been signed should be given freer access to canadian markets the argu ment for increased trade is that the nipponese must export to live without delving too deeply into this compli cated argument it would be well to recall a re port issued by miss gladys dickason vicepresi dent and research director of the amalgamated clothing workers of america issued following a tour of industrial establishments in japan this report is only six months old but memories are notably short in these times of distressing world conditions what miss dickason reported was that nearly three million women or 43 of all women work ers in japan work without pay receiving merely the barest of shelter and food most of these people work in their homes and such places are commonly known as home sweatshops what this really means is that in order to trade on anywhere near equal terms with japan the canadian government would have to find some way of equalizing labour costs it is hardly likely that japanese wages could be increased to meet canadian rates so the logical conclusion is that wages and working conditions in this country would have to be lowered towards those in japan editorial notes good udgment comes from experience and experience comes from paper receptacles which used to be on mill street the town might be kept a bit neater if they were replaced and emptied when garbage is collected the hint that the television fee in canada is likely
