pagk two the acton free press acton ontario thuksday october iflth i9z a good word we were rather perturbed to note last week that conditions had arisen in municipal affairs that necessitated the request of the public utilities commission that the town assume operation of the new sewage disposal system in the public interest however it is well that such difficulties should be considered in the full knowledge of all the electors of acton and publicly discussed it is a pleasure to learn from the news col umns that the problems can be discussed and that coopemtiye work of the municipality can be car ried on started first to operate the hydro system the acton public utilitiawcommission has had waterworks and sewage problems added to their duties the arrangements for carrying on muni cipal affairs in combining offices has worked very beneficially for the town in every way it has dis tributed the load of municipal work and helped in a growing town we agree that the increase of duties perform ed by the utilities commission justifies a larger number on the commission and we commend the commission in carrying on the increasing duties one very successful head of several municipal bodies irkacton had one word that came high in his ostimatibq the word was cooporation it is a good word to remember and also to bear in mind that to get its greatest benefits it must operatebothways 1 as a result of the higher wages for miner in cs coal fields increased coal prices are expected in central canada says the fin ancial post it reports a bl0 rush of buirinp bj householders anxious to get in under the wire mote in your own eye we agree with the editor of the georgetown herald when he says editorially that we in north halton district have dallied too long in solving our building program and erecting new schools to meet the educational needs of the children of this district we cannot however agree with him when he states esquesing and nassagaweya must share the blame when the fateful day comes and the schools cannot accommodate all the pupils most of the blame should be placed on georgetown for the delay it was two years after the four municipalities had formed the north hal- ton district before georgetown consented or re quested to join the district the georgetown herald at the time the district was formed pro claimed in a headline georgetown stands alone as others ask high school area a re solution from that town council in 1947 reaffirm ed their unalterable opposition unless george town was chosen as the site of the school in june of that year the georgetown herald editorially condemned acton and milton county councillors for selling out their towns for a high school district and central school and said we are glad georgetown representatives are suf ficiently strong in character to stand up for their ideals georgetown stood alone matter of fact only one of the two georgetown representatives nn rntin council stood alone it was georgetown and again georgetown alone which fought a legal case before the muni cipal boardonthe division of school costs with the townships acton and milton raised no ob jection to assuming their share of the addedeosts for the benefit of the townships it is this quarrel between the townships and georgetown that is one of the stumbling blocks to the building pro gram esquesing and nassagaweya councils have both passed resolutions stating they were willing to take part of the building program at this time and start with one school in acton the district school board by a vote of 9 to 3 at the meeting in july agreed to start with the building program and the first step would be a school in acton two cf the opposing votes to that motion were from the georgetown members of the board the reason for the extreme urgency in acton is the fact that the present buildina must be vacated by september 1954 to accommodate public school enrolment estimated enrolment in acton public school was two years ago placed at 444 in 195 the actual figures are 460 this year estimated pupils in 1954 are placed at 529 how muchjthis 1954 estimate will be exceeded or how much sooner is a pressing problem when the district was forned an agreement was made with the council and public school board of acton that the building program would bo undertaken before 1953 and acton public school would have the present high school buildings the building program for ugh schools in north halton can be started at once thero is no need for further delay if it isnt startod the fault is with georgetown alotieattd not with the town ships the records speak for themselves the georgetown editor can verify this from his files but he cannot justify himself or his town by put ting the blame on esquesing and nassagaweya we offer no apology for the continuance of the five year serial story of the north helton dis trict in our columns we make no predictions on what or when the end will be it is well to realize that not all the worlds troubles are in the korea peace talks in canada there are 364 people to the square mile in the united states there are people to etierv square mile in the british isles there are s34 people to even square mile cost of living the annual report of thestanding committee en finance of the canadian senate makes in- teresting reading the figures are astounding canada is a big business with tax burdens ex tremely heavy canadians apparently wore able to enjoy some relaxation however the report says it is interesting to note that in the year 1951 the canadian people spent on alcoholic beverages 651000000 tobacco in various forms 422000000 ttace track betting 55000000 commercial recreation 158000000 soft drink beverages of all kinds 160000000 1446000000 for cicry dollar paid out in waacs last year us manufacturers paid another 164 in fringe benefits such as paid vacations pen sion plans etc so that wage rates alone no longer measure the cost of hiring labor oh into the night this isnt educational week but education in cur schools these days is very much in the public eye in the daily press we have the controversy over which grade of our school system is to blame for the poor showing of so many students par t of their inabil to handle jlnglish cor- north e ast west s outh no malde about n year ago in this column was an account of a new marine radio a ut i on which had good weather the station can contact flhlpii 140 miles distant it patrols by radio from almost the eastern tip of lake ontario to long point on laket erie and as far north as georgian bay and lake revealed over the week end that jerry olinski the cele brated wirwnrger from kitchener would join the nhl refereclng staff this season olinski wns pic tured by some as the best referee in the oha last season and by others as an unpredictable show boat but even his detractors had to admit that olinski was an in dustrious official whoso energetic skating kept him on top of the play most of the time if his pro motion will prevent him from fill ing o ha assignments it will b difficult to find an adequate re placement said jerry olinski has relatives in acion the breeze out of their tires for n o get up our children come home looking as if they had been packed in barrels of mud and rolled down a hill the vivid picture of life on the lower middle road drew a comment from the editor that the ford motor company had agreed to investigate another celebrity did you know dr brock chtsh- olm is a haltonlte dr chutholm is directorgeneral of the world health organization which has its headquarters in geneva and last weok he was chosen by the amer ican public health association as one of the alx winners of lasker awards for 152 the awards carry with them 1000 leather bound citations and gold statuettes the presentation is being made next tuesday in the united states the prominent can adian doctor lived formerly in oak vllle just a nobody it was little marys first day nt school the teacher was making out her registration card what is your fathers name she asked daddy replied the child yes i know but what does your mother call him she doesnt coll him anything she likes him obituary rectly it all started it seems when our colleges put up certain tests and found many of the students lacking the ball didnt stay long in the hands of the secondary schools and was promptly tossed in the laps of the public scfiools one public school principal is credited with stating that a college professor is not the man to judge whether english and grammar are properly given in the schools prior to college attendance he backed up his statement with a test of course the whole thing makes newspaper copy and confirms the doubt in the average mans mind and gives force to some young peoples argument that our educational system has something lacle ing in its preparation of our young people for the things they must face in the business and pro fessional world when they complete their school days even our limited education tells us that sentence is too long but we had to get it out in cine breath or suppress it perhaps all the concern over education today ii because it is costing more than it used to we never did get around to reading that hope report on education in ontario that took so long and cost so much to compile some day we are going to refer to the index and see if there isnt some thing that can be done about it in the mean time participation in discussions on who is to blame and why education accounts for so much on the tax bill will have to ust continue th an swers seem very elusive might be well to put before the students i those old lines tiiat used to be in the public school books some place pne line of which said that if riches were worth the getting they must be bravely sought etc poetess in prose readers of this paper with a bit of artlstic temperament will recognize he name of mary ellen varley who has contributed several times to the poets corner now jhe has sent a bit of powerful prose to an oakville paper she lives down that way and the point she wan to make is hit home by clever and striking way she says things this is the lower middle road says mary ellen varley in her let ter but what has happened 10 the middle of it would put a colony of groundhogs to shame the sides arc no better for they ore worn low and contain
