the acton free press acton ontario thursday june lbth 1953 hell like it sunday is father s day to those of us who write so regularly it seems that most every sun day or every week has something that requires a special date of course it was rvlother s day which came first and of course it ust seemed a natural that somebody would think that fathers shouldn t lag behind and we have father s day it is very easy to write nice sentimental things about mothers and flowers and memories but somehow dads ust don t fit into that category so we have folks suggesting ties and socks and shirts and making dad more practical than he al ready is being a father we woudn t for the world say anything derogatory about father s day the same position makes it almost impossible for a father to suggest that children wear a bright red rose to do him honor or that you shower him with gifts to show he s not a bad guy so we just say sunday is father s day what ever way you find to express your regard for him we know will be appreciated even if he has a gruff way of expressing appreciation enumerator ore bury this week ompulng the voter lists to be used in the general election be mre yoyr ome i on the lut the choice is yours the date that has been most often mentioned in the past few weeks has now been officially designated as the day which canadians will go to the polls to choose their government monday august oth the summer months of 1953 are going to have some heat after all even if the warming up is a little belated from now until august 10th the electors will have the candidates and parties putting forth their various planks platforms or issues upon which the voters are asked to base their decisions there may be a great deal of confusion and elect ors may find it hard to make their decisions from the many things which may be proposed it is the right of every canadian over 21 years of age to vote for the candidate of his or her choice it s a decision that is solely the responsibility of the in dividual no matter what date election day comes on you owe it to yourself and your country to go out and exercise your franchise by our free elections of our governments we enjoy privileges which those in many other countries would like 1o have your ballot is secret and something which you should guard carefully make sure you use it on august 1 0th holidays are important but pleasure alone should not keep anyone from making sure that their vote registers their opinion when cana da votes on august 1 0th along the concessions on the weekend we made a little ai nt over some of the concession lines the highways are getting a little crowded these days for weekend pleasure driving but the concession lines are not dusty and driving must be leisurely to keep on the narrow and often twisting roadways most towns have streets named these days in nassagaweya township neat sign posts have been erected at all the crossroads these signs designate the concession lines and the sideroad numbers they are a great help in finding farm homes and an aid to all travellers nassagaweya has set an example that might well be used by all townships where it is not in use a trip along the concession 1 nes br ngs many other items to the forefront most every home seems to have hydro end telephone ava lable it s a bit surprising also to see the number of tele vision aerials that dot the countrys de some times one marvels too at the bu id ngs wh ch are carrying this latest communication system and whether buildings should not have had cons dera tion f rst before any new attachments had been added all the modern lat on has not been conf ned to the h ghways along w th the conven ences and advancement that has come to the back con cessions there is qlso that quiet leisure and rest fulness that has been dr ven from our paved roads connect ng towns and c t es meeting a problem council is to be commended on taking leader ship in an effort to find some solution to the housing shortage that exists in acton but it should also be borne in mind that those who are in need of housing accommodation must assume a responsibility and a willingness to cooperate when any plan is brought forward housing today is high in cost because labor and materials which make the house are at an all time peak land costs are higher too than is often warranted there are rnany plans of governments to help solve the housing problem it can be solved readily if those who want the homes get together the necessary down payments to start their proects councils and governments can provide leadership and help with plans but no wishful thinking on behalf of those who want homes will complete the transaction acton needs more homes they will be built and serv ced if everyone will cooperate there is no such thing as an idle rumor rommcntt the kitchener- waterloo record adding they re all busy the rule of life a recent biography reveals its subject lord actonbs one of the greatest minds of modern times a large part of the world today is worried about losing its liberty it is interesting lo recall acton s idea of liberty and ts value to humanity we quote if happiness is the end of society then liberty is superfluous liberty is not the power of do ng what we like but the right of being able to do what we ought acton said that every age had witnessed man s struggle for freedom but man would never find it within social or political frameworks alone athenian liberty failed for instance because t belonged to an age which possessed no fixed standard of right and wrong and modern de mocracies would also fa i f they ins sted that the will of man not the will of god was the rule of life true pol tical freedom acton insisted de pended on quite another pr nciple the principle that all political authont es must be tested and re formed according to a code which was not made by man rthjing bfwen ffw hint race is on in halton election for federal representative ah yes there s going to be an election they say of course everyone knows the date is aug ust 10 when canada will choose the type of government it thinks best for another four years since confederation just 86 years ago there have been 21 general elections elections seem to have chang ed recently compared with the stones i ve heard ot the ones in former years then everyone was interested and the main issues could be discussed intelligently and sometimes quite hecticly in the baclc rooms of barber shops on the street corner and any place two people might gather a few people now seem par ucularly interested and energet ically back a particular candid ate but the majority seem to go with the wind and sometimes the breeze is fairly sirong the time was they say whin every voter in town could be placed on one side of the fence or the other with very few ncut rils but elections can still be very interesting affairs as this coming federal vote promises to be halton s three candidates that nre known now will be sybil bennett progressive conscrv altvc mu my mcphail libera and stanley allen ccf the procedure in the county is to have nominations nt a meeting in milton which will be july 27 according to my figuring at this meeting candidates will be nom inated having previously been chosen to represent a party or an independent can run if he meets certain financial obllgat ions enumeration of the names be gins next week and in canada it is expected 8500 000 names will have to be gathered and posted on official sheets in halton a rough estimate is placed at 25 000 eligible voters the lists of voters are printed and when all have had ample time to see them they arc opened to revision from the 21st lo the 10th day preced ing the ckctlon a person wh i has been left off the list may apply to the revising officer in person or in writing through a relative employer or agent to have the matter straightened out the election coming up is an important one the only way men can preserve their rights is by exercising them democracy means government by the people but if the people won t take the trouble to govern themselves there will alwivs be someone bold enough to step in and do the job tor them vst no th e ast west s outh what was tacking in moisture in early spring was mad up by the may rains the suamps are ull of water and crops oitino splendid indication of good growth which kind a recent editorial in the saturday evening post points to the facjt there is still a good deal of confusion about the word capitalism it points out that the issue wh ch is being fought out n the world today is not capitalism versus no cap talism but free cap talism versus state capital ism under free enterprise the editorial states individuals are tempted by a hope of profit to save and invest their surplus in railroads a r planes freezer plantsall the thousand and one th ngs required by an expanding economy in a communist state capital is sweat out of the people by taxation conf scat on forced sav ing even forced labor the cost of soviet indus tnahzation was the well being and freedom of millions of russ ans the capitalist world got its capital from the accumulated savings of millions of free men and women the writer goes on to point out that perhaps free capital sm isn t fa r in the sense that it does not reward ncompetent lazy or even unlucky people as lavishly as t rewards the strong ef f c ent and the fortunate but then the question is aked is the alleged unfairness of free capital ism worse than the tyranny of state cap tal sm the ed tor al concludes by stat ng that t sn t enough ust to del eve in free cap tal sm it s also necessary to res st a ppl ng laxat on i ureaucrat c absolut on and nflat on the demons which can k ii free
