the acton free press acton ontario tlluilsimv aikiuht 2711 ims personal responsibility in these days when there seemi tuch a de mand for national health insurance and ihe build ing of more and bigger hospitals it might be well to stop and consider how the sick folks are going to be cared for under our present plans n ham ilton general hospital an entire ward has been closed for a year owing to a shortage of nurses a year ago we visited a hospital in new york state which had ust completed a big new addi tlon the rooms were all furnished but only a small portion of it was in use the reason was almply that no staff could be secured to operate and care for the patients that could be accom modoted go into any hospital in this district or any other and you will find that it is understaffed that the patients cannot be given the attention that those in charge would like lo qive more buildings more government assistance in main taming the health are not the answers to our prob lem of maintaining good health of all canadians the solution will be found m the hands of the people themselves in giving consideration to the things that are not injurious to their own bodies and in a willingness to help solve their own prob lems by m homo carp and retpnni nihr than shifting the load to the state money will never purchase good health for the inctividuator the nation labor day in its original conception labor day was one set aside to honor the industrial worker and the achievements of trade unions today it ts still marked officially only by organized labor every one else takes a holiday but pays little attention to the significance of the day itself yet the day has a meaning for all of us trade unions themselves would be the first to acknow ledge that the day of outright hostility between labor and management has ended that narrow- mindedness on both sides has no place in the building of a greater canada and ust as the fac tionaiism of yesterday is outdated so has the sig mficance of labor day moved with the times on september 7th every employed person m canada from the company president down to the office boy will be taking a holiday it is these millions of people whether they belong in the labor or the management sections of industry who are contributing to the building of this coun try there lies the real meaning of labor day canadians laboring to achieve a better more prosperous canada a finer place in which to live and bring up their families let there be trade union parades and celebrations on september 7th but let there also be a moment s reflection by each of us on the broader concept of labor m canadatrie creation by our own free efforts of the kind of country we want our children to in hem still room for all talked with a visitor from vancouver the other day and he told of the big house building program on the pacific coast go into every city town or hamlet from there to the atlantic coast and even along the highways in this section it is the same story in spite of all the home building there is still a shortage of housing accommoda tion but here and there along the concession lines you ii find houses without occupants and good dwellings going to rum because no one lives in them more and more we seem to become a people who want to live in groups even the folks who go to summer cottages and had the urge to rough it and get away from the city are havinq their summer homes in groups and within talking dis tance of neicjhbors we just don f ive to our selves for er lona so the cities and own qit biqger and the i get f led up wherever well never know why never will understand why it is that news paper work seems to stay so long in families down in bowmanville the james family has been in the weekly newspaper field for 76 yean w well remember m a james who purchased the family journal and we know well his son george who is now editor the grandsons johnnie and bill are now in the business and johnnie was again returned as member of the house of com mom for durham county and coming along are several great grandchildren for whom fond hopes are entertained that they will carry on in ihe newspaper field the james family of bowman ville has made history in the newspaper field next year the statesman will mark its 100th an nivcrsaiy and 77 of those 100 years will see one family conducting the bowmanville paper next year the orgus news record will mark its centennial for over half a century the temp lin family has owned and operated this fine week ly newspaper the third generation of tomplins are now actively associated with the news re cord it has been our privilege to know all three generations no doubt there are many other families anautorr3khich-newspaper- lorun in the veins and become a family tradition but these two come to mind as they enter 150 years of ser vice to their respective communities tougher to collect collecting bills from canadians is getting a little tougher reports the financial post so far nobody s too alarmed business gener ally is high and there s still room for expansion of credit but some fields are feeling the pinch there s more demand for collection agencies services more manufacturers have been asking banks for credit extension in many cases because they had to grant credit extension to their retail cus tomers the retailers in turn have had to ask for extension on their drafts because their customers were slow paying accounts while most are paying their bills one credit manager says we are getting the money alright but it is taking longer and requires a great deal more pressure fading bmtwn th umt more business changes as many older stores have new owners ii may irrm itranfe lo take the reader of thi column on anolher quick tour of i newfoundland to bntrsh columbia gathetn annual convention to exchange experiences renew acquaintanceships and have an opportunity to broaden one s know ledge of this far flung nation of canada il is an experience of which we never seem to tire last year the meeting was in st andrews nb this year in the midst of canada s prairies and next year closer at home in toronto where the gathering of 1955 will be held will be dead ed at the convention this year during our years in newspaper work we have travelled to such gatherings m various cities from the atlantic to the pacific sometimes we think we should like to see the other countries of the world but always there seems so much to see in this canada of ours that a lifetime seems hardly long enough to crowd m the opportunities that are right here in our own nat on next week these columns will undoubtedly be oiven over to our western trp on the program lined up for the saskatoon hosp talily are such things as a rodeo a chuck wagon race and
