tyu two the acton free press acton ontario thursday march isth 1u4 it did happen here for over 40 years weve counted on news paper presses to get out the editions on schedule some times the presses had to be coaxed a little and sometimes temporary measures had to be taken until more permanent repairs could be made but always he printed sheets rolled off and while extra hours had to be put in the paper came out on time last week we were three hours late and if it hadn t been for the helpfulness of editor walt eiehn and staff and the georgetown herald press delivery of the free press and the canadian champion would not have been made until days later it seems to be an unwritten rule among weekly newspapers that if a fellow publisher has troubles he cannot overcome equipment is avail able to him from the nearest office so when our call went to georgetown early thursday morning asking if their press was available that day the answer was sure come along perhaps we should explain that actually the trouble developed in mtd afternoon on wednes day there was an unfamiliar bump and examina tion showed that the mechanism operating the distribution of the ink on the type was out of place three hours beneath the press indicated the dislocation was not a minor job and since the shop foreman david dills was suffering from a broken ankle the only solution that seemed plausible was to put in a call to toronto for an ex pert pressman we knew he couldn t guide us to our trouble but agreed to come up that night and try to make repairs and so into the night our friendly pressman arrived about nine oclock located the trouble and it looked as if we would be on our way to publication in a couple of hours four times the press was started up and each time the part went out of adjustment about 2 30 thursday morning the last start ended in a real entanglement of the mechanism and clashing of gears that made it quite obvious there would 3prwsfununhlnew g were secured it was then decided that perhaps we could make the run without part of the inking system operating the parts were taken off the press the mechanics put the broken pieces in a box and left for toronto at 3 30 a m and we tried printing minus part of the gspal equipment a run of per haps a 100 sheets showed us that the printing was farm from standard at 4 30 a m we quit and went home for a rest of an hour and a half thursday morning we made the arrangements to print in georgetown and all that day a truck shuttled back and forth between acton george town and milton and thursday evening by six o clock all the champions in milton were in the mails and two hours later the copies of the free press were ready for mailing some copies of the free press were on sale in acton by 6 15 that evening just an argument the argument most frequently put forward by those who support the present system of govern ment control of broadcasting was summed up by the massey commissioners who subscribe to it in these words radio as one of the most powerful means of education may be regarded as a social influence too potent and too perilous to be ignored by the slate what in fact does radio do it educates it informs it entertains but these are also the func tions and capacities of newspapers books and magazines radio employs the spoken word the latter three the printed word each to the same purpose the only justification for regarding broadcast ing in a different light from printed publication is the technical means employed and since the main concern is the free dissemination of informa tion to the public a technical point has been made justification for government control of broadcast ing after the day was over friday morning another part of the press was taken to toronto where arrangements had been made by our two pressmen friends for repairs and where other parts were being made satur day morning we received a telephone call that the mechanics would be along with the new parts by two o clock thai afternoon about five o clock that afternoon the parts had been fitted extra bolts had been put in place to avoid a similar mishap the necessary adus ments were madt and the press rolled aga n w th out any unusual bumps and ust a i ttle bit better than before on our behalf we ii be que q ad t we aet another 40 vears over without a similar occur rente for any of our newspaper friends who read this we ii add that f they want the name and ad dress of the press mechanics who gave us such splend d service well be glad to supply it along with tht telephone number they ve helped w faee when presr pr had u baffled and always g ven us wonderful serv ce weybum sasi rev ew it s far better to have plenty of wheat on hand thai to go nto the new year w th q es empty wheat s wealth and as valuable as dollar b lis needed a positive course a motter of great concern to people in artd out of the government in canada today is the sharp increase in unemployment in this country there are more people working in canada than ever be fore there is more money being spent for goods and services than ever before and yet we will have between four and five hundred thousand people out of work this winter one suggestion made to the government for relief of the situation is an increase m unemploy ment insurance benefits this seems to be a very negative approach a more positive course would be to discover why skilled canadian workers are without employment and take decisive action to solve the problem at its source the factor that makes jobs is purchasing pow er and canadians are spending more money to day than ever in history that is a fact but it is elso a fact that we are spending more money ebroadthan ever in in 1953our imports reached an all time high if exports had kept pace we would probably have no serious unemploy ment to plague us in recent years we have been very generous in granting tariff concessions to other countries perhaps too generous and certainly more gene ious than others have been to us there is no sug aestion that we should attempt to exclude im ports but would we not be wise to admit a re sponsibility to our own working population education leads field in tax
