t7 frrr r j- pa0e two the acton free press acton ontario t march 31 19653 parents and children the daily press has been making quite a mountain out of caseswhere school teach ers have been in the courts- because of their methods of getting discipline in the school since the cases are not in the district comrrient may be general every school atsome time has these cas es of disobedience by pupils its been going on longer than we can remember and weve heard our parents talk about such things trouble as a rule is not with the children but more often with the parents who make public i- sue of what in other days was purely a matter between the child and the teacher too often members of school boards take the side of the pymlnd aggrieved parent a a o schools is a privilege not a right children who misuse it should have it taken away from them part of the training m our educationalsystem is that the child must learn to live with other people and adhere to the rules which are basic in our day of living in groups for some children th se most dtffictrf school life often it is more difficult than ad vancement in the course of studies however it iiunportanlthal every chiid should acquirethat behaviour to get along with other people early in life parents can be helpful if they work along with teachers and school in these formative years they can be very unkind fo their children if they encourage disobedience and disrespect for auth ority easter fashion fashion for eastertide mailing is to have those brtght littleeaster seals on very mailing piece you send out of course you have not forgotten to make your contribution liberal when you re ceived your mailing from the rotary club with out your generosity to back up the easter seal campaigrvroe seals are meaningless evidence of the seals on your mailing indicat es of course that the easter seals campaign for cnppled children has both your moral and finan cial support remember that it is through your help that crippled children can face the world on equal terms with those who are healthy and strong so make your contribution now through the use of easter seals that a helping hand can be given to assist crippled children the work of the rotary clubs in this effort knows no bounds save the need of the children why not while it is compulsory to each year obtain new license plates for motor vehicles and you gwajof your drivers must permit- to operate an automobile it appears that the only qualification required for these licenses is the prescribed fee there is no provision made for responsibility in case of damage done persons or property while the vehicle is on the road of course if you happen to own a home o other attachable property other than the motor car you are responsible for damage to the extent of all you own that can legally be squeezed ouj of you but the individual who owns nothing can go through life and collect his bid age pension with out paying anything to make good for killing- other people and destroying the property of other people there is a fund however collected from each individual at a dollar per license that an in nocent victim might collect from if all the legal barriers are hurdled to reach it who fixes what a while ago we had an investigation in the paper business which deduced that paper whole salers were combined to keep prices uniform fines wee levied and the price lists remairv identical- a few weeks ago it was the manu facturers of wire fence more recently buyers of electric wire and cable found prices were uniform and another investigation hasnt yet been con cluded or the penalties meted out in these days of standardization security and uniformity there seems to be little incentive for a fellow to make a better mousetrap thai his competitor this price fixing in the federal field is icosely scrutinized in ontario new farm marketing legislation is propo ti th provincial government a introduced in the legislature would give the most sweeping power to producer groups prices would be fixed sales controlled or even prohibit ed to impose such a scheme all that is required is a two thirds maority of the growers voting in nd thenaulunialildlly all of the products and all of the producers must come into the scheme we dont know yet whether this price fixing will extend to the home gardener or not but one woold have thought with the experience of the past in marketing boards that the ontario government would have profited by the past the point that bothers us is who is legalized to fix prices its a fine point that might enter into dominionprovincial relationships one gov ernment says those who combine to fix prices should he fined another ruling body brings in legislation to set up price fixing and marketing for producers of other commodities maybe we ought to go back to the days of the early settlers when each produced enough for his own needs and the market was localized within a few miles at least in those days you produced or starved and there were no positions for direct ing the flow of traffic and taking toll on every thing pretty soon the consumer is going to have to make up his mind which group he should oin or which he should be against we quit were getting more confused how many seats are there in the senate brief comment that snow removal equipment came in handy wintery week applicant to produce an insurance policy showing that in case of accident the vehicle he proposed to operate was adequately covered to protect other people why can t we have com pulsory automobile insurance for every driver in the province such a provision would most certainly take off- our highways a lot of irresponsible persons and a lot of worthless cars which are a menace to the public at large from the size of the butter allowance made on servings in city eating establishments one would never realize that a surplus of butter exists if one were contemplating a soourn to the south it
