urged actonians to boost thro beauty i i largest canadian producer of plastic pipe manufacturers of extruded plastics pioneers in canadian plastics wjt a s 5 j v- 7w tt i exactly 50 years ago the acton free press cooperated with the board of trade as the chamber of commerce was then called t boost the town just as is being done in this entire issue- but the difference in size and content in dicate clearly how acton has grown since then the editor paid more attention to the beautiestof the town rather than to its industries but still the comparison is most apt this week the article was published in thj issue of the sfree press of thurs day morning may 18 1905 it follows beautiful acton the board of trade anxious to instill citizens with the united purpose of beautifying acton splendid natural resources the session of the acton boarfl of traoe last week was largely taken upnvith a general discussion rs to how acton always an at tractive place in summer can be made more beatiful and attractive anchfic free press was request ed to use its influence in acconip- tishing this end- acton occupies a picturesque location is nearly a thousand feet higher than toronto and has nat ural resources and environments which are superior to those of the majority of towns among our pre sent features which lend an at tractive air to the town are the noble shade trees on our streets cur splendid pavements corporate ion pond and fairy lake our commodious public park and grounds for athletic games and sports our beautiful fairview ce metery and monument hill rising in a wealth of foliage as a back ground our well built churches and public buildings and our spac ious residences with their wellkept lawns and gardens all these are attractive features and most of them manifest the thought and care and prescience of worthy cit izens of earlier years but much can be done by citiz ens of the present day personally nd collectively to enhance ap pearances that exist the council lias purchased an improved road machine for the purpose of im proving the roadways of all our streets and defining uniformly the 1 oulevard opposite every property this public body has also in view the laying of additional pave ments and the beautifying of the public park by the planting of shade trees making driveways etc but the private citizen can do much indeed to add to these worthy efforts the free press hopes to make acton more beautiful by of fering an occasional suggestion along this line together we can jnjfee clean homes and home surroundings first arid then an attractive and sightly town aia whole we can secure with green grass and bright flow ers with playgrounds and swim ming pools fa better citizens from the childhood of native and for eign parents growing up in our midstthari we can produce in un sightly and unsanitary surround ings one has said that true civic pat riotism teaches unselfishness it i selfishness andt carelessness that give unbeautiful surroundings out of sight out of mind is the text upon which tin cans gather in vac- aht lots garbage festoons the park in certain quarters and selfishness dictated that text many who read this will per haps eagerly ask what can i do the answer is begin about your own home whether it is only one room or a stately residence have you ever watched water coming to a boil on the kitchen stove it sings it simmers it seems that nev er will the smooth surface be bro ken yet look here comes one little bubble that has absorbed heat until it cannot hold back for its neighbors or anything and it bursts on the surface presto a score a hundred join it the water is boiling just so is the personal effort all you can soy about making your home and town mow beauti ful will be good talk and you can well get together talk it over and more quietly but steadily act upon every plan that may be suggested that will make acton more beauti ful made in acton the centre of progress producers of high grade mens casuals 1 v mens
