bwndt chronicles ginger farm written specially for the acton te- press by gwendellite r clarke a liist week as i wrote this column we were still waiting for the truck to arrive far transporting the cows that partner had sold it was almost nine clock at night before the big tractortrailer pulled into the yard in about halfanhou it wa on its way again with all ou milkr ing cows and three calves at foot we put in a long nerveracking day waiting for that truck to comr and course partner had to milk the cows again but now it all be longs to the past and we have al ready had the experience of one week without cows but we are not without milk yet i had plenty stacked away in the refrigerator to see us over for a little while it will seem odd when we start getting tmr milk in bottles or cans or packets according to what we want wednesday morning fate took on ironic twist i was out in the kit chen at 6 am force of habit will continue to get us up early for a while yet i expect looking out the window what should 1 see but a number of cattle all over the garden of course in a few- ihinutcs partner in his pyjamas was out chasing them away froni the house we phoned our nearest neighbor but he was not the owner of the strays which we found to be five tvoyearold holstein heifers while partner was getting dress ed the heifers wandered down the lane to the road and the last we saw of them they were- running down the highway ahead of two previously fastmoving cars at noon we were told they were in a neighbors wheat field but wc havent heard yet who those cattle belonged to when i saw those hei fers i really thought it was a ne mesis on us for selling the cows news travels fast unise days our cows were still in the stable ivhen a young fellow living 25 miles away came in to see if part ner wanted to sell the milking ma chine he did a little later we had two offers for the milk cooler so thats going out too before long i shall really believe we are out of the dairy business at present it seems like a won derful dream from which i fear a rude awakening it was really splendid to see partner stepping but for the qac at guelph last friday without a worry in thi- world about what time he should be home however the forces of naturo are conniving to keep him em ployed there was a strong wind the other day which blew down part of a big chestnut tree in the back yard completely wrecking my triple clothesline so now part ner has some work to do with tho buck saw plus a- clothesline to fix there have also been pails and pails of water to carry to the gar den it has been so dry but thank goodness we had a beautiful rain last night also a thunderstorm and i could watch the lightning and listen to the roll of the thun der without caring if the power did go off insofar as we were con cerned so often storms come up just about chore time and in the past a power failure was my one fear forcing partner to milk by hand a thing which his crippled arthritic harydsare no longer cap able of doing without tremendous effort and considerable pain that rain must have been a blessing to the strawberrygrowers without it it would probably have been a very short season next week i expect to be away so i got my berries early now they are safely stowed away in the jars of course it being so early in the sea- son i had to pay top price for my fruit now tm thinking perhaps i pays to buy early these are such campkilville gordon ringler guest speaker intended for last week the june meeting of the campv bellville w i was held atypie village school with mrs bereavement four ontario cities went through 1954 without a single fatal motor vehicle collision they were niag ara falls north bay sudbury and woodstock beautiful berries no waste so to my surprise i put down 13 pints from 10 boxes of berries my goodness i almost forgot to mention that important event that took place last week the provinc ial election however we didnt forget to vole which is morethan some people can say at the little country school where we east our votes there were 164 on the voters list we went along about four pm and at that time only 54 citizens had been to vote how is it possible for so many to cafe so little for the privileges of a free democ racy no doubt there were more out before the polls closed but us- uajy the country people get out early in the day 7 well this chronicle is coming from ginger farm the next one- if my plans hold good mjty be written many miles from here exact location unknown i have been vey busy laying in supplies for partner he- says it looks as it i were preparing for a seige how ever he will not be alone for long at a time the family are taking it in turns to come home and see that all is well so youll be hearing from me again next week i hopf sincere thanks to our many good workers and baler twine 675 a bale at if
