kwv v- a v t jvuxe two ms the acton free press acton ontario thuhsday july nth im just plain leisure judging by holiday rtcj weekend reports it would seem that canadians would need to learn hpwto use more judiciously the leisurevjhat is be ing placed at their disposal the shorter wprk- rwekthelonger vacation periods are nor proving entirely beneficial to many canadians the drowning accidents are during the summer jnpnihs running a close second to the highway fatakfies- perhaps we need to take pleasure a little more moderately and enjoy it trying to cramp too many rhilef imethe highway trip attempting to gulp too much fun into the few hours at the bathing beach can end in disaster shorter work- weeks and more holidays carrisrtng wider and more abundant pleasure lets not overcrowd our leisure hours and assume that these are the ulti mate in happiness if you have more leisure spend it safely and use some of it to conserve your energies and your health resist the urge to cram all your moments away from work into activity spend some leisure time in just plain leisure safer in small towns canadian towns and villages are showing canadian cities the way to greater traffic safety by far the smallest number of accidents occur in towns and in villages and at rural intersections the national highway safety conference conclud es in an analysis of road traffic accidents using a special study of the dominion bureau of statistics the national highway safety con ference points out that in ontario during 1953 10 per cent of road accidents occurred in towns and villages compared with 41 per cent in cities 28 per cent on highways and 21 per cent on county and township roads more than twothirds of these accidents occurred in clean weather when the road was dry lawn watering there seems to be no end to the gadgets the hardware people are putting out these days to interfere with a mans pleasure in watering his lawn the latest is a plastic spray guaranteed to soak the grass thoroughly and take all the pleasure out of the job for the man to whom watering the lawn is a rite the true lawn watering enthusiast will of course pay no more attention to the plastic spray than he has to the hundreds of other gadgets that have come out over the years he will go right on loafing away an hour or two every evening while seeming to be industrious he isnt a man who lets a spray do the work or one who attaches the hose hurriedly directs a blasting stream to the grass for a few minutes and then tosses it back in the cellar he is defi- n not the typ who a a s a then goes about things he considers more im- portant the real enthusiast takes at least an hour about it he works best if he has a garden chair ot verandah steps to sit on there should also be a stretch of lawn or garden well within the limit of the stream of water he controls large plots in volve tiresome walking about and dragging of hose across grass both destructive of the quiet contemplation that is part of watering a lawn by hand he scorns those who cannot make up their minds and are forever whirling the nozzle from one spray to another perfect conditions call for a chair facing east sothat the setting sun will shine over the water- ers shoulder making up delightful rainbows that can be moved to and fro with the easy swing of a wrist another real pleasure is shooting the water high into a tree so that it falls through the leaves giving all the delights of cooling rain with none of its discomforts bytmft5t important is the time that lawn- watering provides for contemplation some be- lieve that a man lazy enough to sit for an hour watering a lawn wont think of anything useful however its our idea that some of the most satisfying thinking is done on front lawns in the cool of the evening with the music of water fajl- ing providing a peaceful accompaniment oracles and cracker barrels j- in the current issue of liberty magazine rather interesting feature is headed canada crackerbatrel oracles our weekly newspapers lust whylhe heading should have been chosen is one of those things which only writers of head lines could explain there hasnt been a biscuit manufacturer put out crackers in barrels for 40 years but then the magazine article is a bit re miniscent in its content and cites many incidents of early experiences of those who have spent lifetime in the weekly newspaper field it also tells of the present status of weekly newspapers in canada evaluates their power on canada and gives many quotes from weekly -editors-acres- gmad there are 963 weekly papers in canada of which 524 belong to the canadian weekly newspaper association no paper is allowed membership in this- organization until if has been successfully published for two years and 75 per cent of jts circulation must be paid no free distribution newspapers are per mitted to become members we found the article interesting perhaps be cause we know so many of the papers and edi- tors referred to i does give a fai in picture of canadas weekly press and its in fluence the writer confesses in the opening paragraphs to the fact his direct intimacy is con fined to one summer workjng on the peel gazette al brampton he covers canada however pretty thoroughly in his effort to give a portrayal of weekly newspapers photo by esther taylor summer is no problem for the younger generation its fill ed with days of games and play loafing and laughing gener ally a lime to enjoy life at its best what could be a more agreeable pastime for four curious lads than to go on a tadpole and minnow hunt like the quartet of hearties above when thats over ancmnhe feet are wet theres lots more to do ask any boy i v n orth w est ast s outh legal or illegal now w we two kinds of strikes the legal and the illegal strike last month we received a wire from the paper mills which have supplied our newsprint for over 30 years that shipments for the month would have to be curtailed on ac count of an illegal strike the strike isnt settled yet and we are not sure of what will happen to our shipment due the first of august it seems than an illegal strike is one that is called without the consent of the union bosses they had one in england recently which tied up steamships for weeks we understand the one at the paper mill which is our source of supply is be cause the company on rare occasions has to have men work a few hours into sunday morning to finish up a run to supply a customer legally the employer is within the rights of- the union con tract to have this work completed but the union does nothing to enforce its members to abide by the contract this month members in another plant went out to enforce- the demands of what we are told is an illegal strike if in august the newsprint in your paper is different youll realize we had to switch lo another supplier after 30 years the point that is going lo be bothersome in l and management relations in the future is the contracts between unions and companies if ojieiide wiudotqbeythejfioal implications of a contract why should the other side to be effec tive a contract and its terms must be binding on both parties by its irresponsibility the union that is unable to hold its members to a contract is bound to lose foce at any bargaining table col lective bargaining loses its effect when individ uals refuse to meet the terms made by the group collectively what will happen to the benefits and guaran teed wages and holidays and pay increases forced by the group collettively if the other parties to the contract decide not to abide by the contract terms with the illegal strike labor has a problem in its own ranks which may well be decisive in its continued progress marc industrial kite in georgetown last week
