historical works the basic idea of the anthology was to produce a collection of the best unpublished work of alberta authors to commemorate the jubilee working under the direction of editorhitchiet dr w g hardy head of the department of classics at the university of alberta and former president of the canadian authors association the editorial board selected its material from more than 1000 manuscripts comprehensive work illustrations include color repro ductions of eight prizewinning paintings from a provincewide competition and 12 color photo graphs reproduction of the latter is far from perfect but black and white drawings by h g glyde are beautifully modernistic the anthology is divided into six sections dr hardy in the editors preface says the principal aim was to present chronploglicaly the story of the provindpbmts historical back ground and pioneer beginnings its development achievements and potentialities and above all some thing of the spirit of its people the first section the romance of yesterday describes alberta up to 1905 including the indians the first white man the arrival of the mounted police and the stories of early missionaries ranchers and farmers the period from 1905 to 1945 our changing years is described next the alberta of today is de scribed in the third and fourth sec tions from chuckwagon races to industries old and new ranching and farming oil and gas develop ment notes outline error is common mistake acton ontario august 26 1955 the editor acton free press acton ontario dear sir as former residents of kingston ontario we feel that we should point out the error which occurred on your editorial page last week in reference to esther taylors photo of a guardsman and the mas cot of old fort henry at kingston your caption wfriuld appear to indicate that the royal military college cadets take part in activ ities at the fort this is a com mon error since the college is loc ated directly across the bay from the fort the garrispn of the fort is composed of students of queens university kingston and they are not in any way connected with the military the goats name is david and he goes on parade with the garrison each day a special pen is kept for him in the southwest corner of the fort and the corporal shown with him in the photo is his year round keeper a very nice photo and easily recognized as fort henry the cit adel of upper canada sincerely yours bob r t brayshaw and mrs brayshaw ronicles written specially for the acton ree press by gwendoline p clarke if variety is the spice of life thenlast- week we had it first a army show travel proves an asset montreal cp raymonde maranda of montreal is putting to good peacetime use the experience she gained as an army showgirl during the second world war shojias become travel adviser in new york for a major airline transworld airlines there she dispenses advice based largely on her travels as the alio girl of the canadian army show performing for servicemen at home and abroad she advises women how to pack what to take and where to go for an enjoyable vacation a recent survey showed that women consti tute 60 per cent of all air travellers and many of them travel with short stories taking up 110 pages children she jd in an interview and poetry follow under authors airiines arc aware of this fact and of tomorrow the anthology in- many pancs in the world jo make use of the telephone in 1877 lake nipigon in northwestern ontario is dotted with more than 2000 islands welcome change in the weathev wbich gave us a chance to enjoy whaf came after a session with the preserving kettle beginning i braided rug visitors for two days threshers for two meals and then the canadian national exhibition and more of the same coming up except for threshing that is over and done with not so tho canning and pickling much of it still on the waiting list and it wont wait too long either and more visitors are with us again we are glad to see them of course partner and i went to the ex for opening day and we did enjoy it we watched the march past of the boy scouts as they gave the salute to their chief lord row- allan for over an hour on they came those boys in a neverending stream of marching feet boys and leaders of all nations light skins and dark skins not all in the boy scout uniform as we know it but in the traditional uniform of their own countrythe swiss with their colorful red skull caps the sved s equally attractive in blue and white caps boys from the near east with turbans of grey white or blue some hanging to shoulder length and of course there wore all types of fcerets there were boys in short pants of blue khaki or irish green and the scots in their kilts some marched in true military style others apparently were still a little new in training some car ried packs boys from the usa had red sweaters or jackets slung on their belts one carried a suit case one older boy even managed to sport a corncob pipe we won dered how he managed to get away with it we noticed one wheelchair scout in the ranks later on the i parade ground we counted no less i than ten wheel chairs a number of excellent bands gave color to the march past including i the main visiting musical attraction for this years cne the united j states navy band with its smart navy and white uniform thee was an embarrassing moment for the sergeantmajor of one canad ian band who threw his baton in the air in the approved spectacular style but he failed to catch it on its way down the baton landed in the dust at his feet at the official opening that af ternoon representative scouts fron over sixty nations marched to the banc shell and stood at either side of the platform each beating his countrys flag but you will have heard or read all about the open ing ceremonies so i wont go into details except to say it was a thrilling moment when lord row- allan touched the control buttoi giving the signal for the release of small bombs tha sent aloft parachutes with flags of the var ious nations attached as for the exhibition itself i cant tell you very much about what it has to offer this year as we were there only about six hours and six hours wouldnt be too long to spend even in one build ing i specially wanted to see the cat show other years it has always been uver by the unit t visited the lix i didnt expect partner to come in with me but strange to say fhe did maybe that wflsjust as well otherwise i might hive been there yet 1 wanted to see the siamese cats as i have always had a sneaking fancy i qiild like one to my surprise there were dozens ol them on my last visit there were only a few apparently there ave three types of siamese sealpoints abyssinians and one other which i have forgotten the sealpnints are the most colorful but the ab yssinians have a lovely soft cott and seem to have a more con tented disposition among the other breeds was a white cat with one green eye and one blue just like the- kitty i had when i was very small 1 dont know how true it is but i have always un derstood that if both eyes of a white cat are blue then the eat is deaf we saw many other cats black cats and grey orange and manx partnersaid our black joe and mitchiewhite could match the best of them any day of the week of course we made a point of seeing the shell oil observation tower and the arches of the pro vinces the tower should be quite a landmark we wish we could say as much for the arch ways frankly we were disap pointed from the advance pub licity we expected to find some thing quite imposing something solid and substantial worthy of the province which each repres ents in our humble estimation the arches are totally inadequate for that purpose we hope the proposed new womens building scheduled for 1956 will not be constructed on the same pattern however taking it all in all tho ex is well worth going to see and we hope to make a return journey seeing a few of the feat ures we missed on our first trip interurban board wantsbetter office the inter urban area board definitely will not stay another winter without improvements be ing made in their office accomm odation cr jack richardson in
