informing me i had been appointed to the jamboree journal staff the journal was the official daily newspaper of the jamboree- and in its pages each day were mirrored the happenings of this great gathering of the clans in both words and pictures under the editorship of bert mortlock of ottawa the canadian executive commissioner for pub lications who led the canadian continent to the coronation two years ago the journal was a small 16page size paper each day 10000 copies were printed in brampton 80 miles from the camp site of this number ap proximately 4000 were sold each day and the remainder were to be bound into souvenir editions the weather they could scarcely stand the heat yet that morning the cooler temperatures had kept them shivering in their sleeping bags until 10 had lunch anyway one afternoon i was assigned to report a press conference at the french headquarters i was cord- inlly received and the- contingent leader- m rigal spoke to us at considerable length then we were served ginger ale crackers and french cheese and all left with apologies to lilrs hinton who taught me french there was no story m rigals remarks to the distress of several of the reporters were all in french with absolutely no interpretation another afternoon i attended a reception by the greek contingent at their campsite one of the scouts in his frilly white national garb presented each of the visitors witn a bag of raisins one nlghtu passing the french equatorial africa campf ire wo strolled in and were soon caught up in a wierd native jungle dance singing something about chickens i think these boys were very friendly while they spokefrench their enthusiasm and friendliness broke down the language barriers and we enjoyed their hospitality in a setting surounded by the grass huts they had built the 1500scout contingent from the united states came equipped to thoroughly enjoy their favorite pasttime of swapping each night they were spotted under the lamp posts bartering for prize possess ions french cuisine food was always a topic of con versation stories about headquar ters staff meals included the one about the man who broke his hard boiled egg to find dinner served in best french style one patrol served the remaining three prefac ed by the reading aloud of the menu by a young maitrc dhotel in french of course quite a few acton visitors at tended the canadian pageant de picting canadian history last thursday evening little did they realize that when those 1500 shriek ing indians attacked that card board fort we photographers were almost massacred along with the settlers we were only saved by leaping up onto the huge platform since returning we hear of vis itors we did not see there and of fer apologies for not showing them around prince cheered the friday junket to the exhib ition was pretty exhausting because in addition we had been assigned to do the photography for the last two days of the jamboree one person at least was full of enthus iasm his serene highness em manuel the prince of liechtenstein as the sole representative of this small principality in the parade he was so engrossed with the applause he rvceived from the grandstand he overlooked giving the salute to lord rowallnn and camp chif jackson dodds the informal closing ceremonies on saturday afternoon were clin ixed by the good fellowship dis played by all the scouts al through the grounds boys of all nationalities were walking togeth er their arms linked as ihe flag came down for the last time- and the band burst into auld lang syne everyone felt a
