brandnew building it was a 20- 000 bequest from an acton man the late j a murray that made acton the smallest village in the world to have its own ymca the interest of the entire town has been sustained in the buildihg since then with a succession of capable y secretaries providing leadership for dozens of clubs and activities the will of the late j a murray was published in the free press in july 1930 it said in part s2m bcqaeat to the municipal corporation of the village of acton the sum of twenty thousand dollars 20000- 00 subject to the conditions set out in paragraph 3 hereof the said last mentioned sum however shall be held in trust by my executors and trustees and the income there of amounting to 100000 a year shall be paid to my said wife until the council of the said village shall undertake and agree to build or provide a home for poor or sick children and aged or helpless peo ple who are in need of charity or a young mens christian association building or a building to be used jointly by the young mens and young womens christian associa tions when my executors shall pay over the said sum to the council of the said village on its undertaking to pay the said yearly income to my wife the will went on nt some length with details it was after the death of mrs murray in 1033 that plans began and the committee decided the form the building should take auspicious opening the free press of exactly 20 years ago stilted the community iriterest inactons new jmuerny memorial ymca was evident by the gather ing at the official opening last night when the building wns filled tn capacity with a crowd of 400 or more and numbers wrerc unable to gain admission it viis surely an auspicious opening of the latest community asset tilt- scene would have gladdened the heart of the late j a murray had he been able to witness it it certainly showed an appreciation of the building and work that his beiivficience has made possible on this occasion his only brother mr w a murray was able to be present and occupy a seat on the platform and he and mrs murray along with mr and mrs g murray attended this opening on the platform with local pre sidents were associated representa tives from visiting yjwca organ izations representatives of the na tional council and the local clergy an orchestra under the direction of mr chas mason provided a splend id musical program mr g w murray chairman of the murray memorial committee and nephew of the late j a mur ray spoke he was honored at be ing at the gathering and taking part robt r hamilton fred a hoffman optometrists formerly e p head phone guelph 1924 58 st georges square following a bequest of 20000 from the tote j a murray actons attractive ymca building was pfficially opened 20 years ago about 400 attended the ceremonies in the new building and activities began at once the building houses the public utilities office the library masonic hall and an apartment upstairs as well as the ymca room and gymnasium his appreciation of the work of the committee and the help of citizens was expressed he told many inti macies in connection with the donor and how the remembrance of acton came about it was fifteeen years ago that mr murray had conceived the plan of benefitting his native town he rcviewid the various steps of the securing of the building and he and ull others were proud of
