and some hot scores should be on the record sheet adios amigos is farm hospitality on the wane this was the question a speaker at a district institute meeting ask ed her fellow members recently then she went on to answer the question which was of so much interest to all of them the wi ladies thought the pap er would be read with pleasure by others than themselves and so it was submitted for publlcatfont here is what one of- the well- known district institute women who asked to remain anonymous had to say b farm hospitality on the iwaan rural people have always been noted for their hospitality and some places away from the towns and cities you can sure find it yet today however in this modern day and ageit may be less appar ent than m the early part of the century if that is true i believe it is the great changes in our ec onomy first means of transportation and better roads to travel oh in years gone by to travbl 10 jmilcs with a good horse wbtudtajse an hour or more today 10 or 15 min utes saying ill be home for sup per second higher standard of liv ing and higher cost of living small er families too which means there is not as much help to operate the farm and the farmer has to go home to do the milking and chores third farming today is more of a mechanized business and requires more attention than in the old days so many farm homes today have radios and television thev man d n sec eutexlainmcnt of their neighbors fourth you often hear the town people s there are too many oianizalioils to atteiulr tot are- thc farmers with their federation farm forums junior farmers wo mens institutes breed organizat ions plowmen soil and crop assoc iation and many others farmers find thee organizations very pro fitable fifth another point occurs in some areas there are nfct as many farmers at one time 60 to 70 per cent of our population was rural in 1951 it was estimated only 14 per cent were actually farm people we have so many people living on the farm today who work hi the towns or cities the major ity or these people differ from the farm people and often bring their own friends instead of associating with their farm neighbors one party was heard to say tht after spending the day in the office and driving home in the traffic he was glad to relax in his- own home is this hospitality to the farmer next to you another thing to consider where ther is a small family they may notbe prepared for guests but i can- say any tanner will give you a cup of tea and unless something unusual is wrong you are general ly invited to stay for a meal if near time to eat for myselfi i used to fuss but now if i have guests come they take what i have and if they are not satisfied they do notneea to stay another time one evening my husband and i went into a home we sat around an old coal fire our hostess put the coffee pot on opened the stove door and with toaster in hand made us two slices of toast each with butter and brown sugar that wa one of our most enjoyable evenings is hospitality on the wane not in our neighborhood what about our farmers six and seven tractors all on one farm to help a neighbor in time of trouble just the other day when one of your town men disappeared our men went out on the search too and returning down the fourth lino one of the farmers vive called the six men into the house and li cl sandwiches cake and coffee wait ing for them the very next day the farmers friends went back to that homo and helped with his seeding as the was sick in the spring and wa behind withhis work hospitality may not be like i used to be years ago you could mt drive horses too far and back you gcjiojauysticd for meals or ovcr- night on account of transportation the farmers door was always as they said on the latch string i remember when about six years old when the peddlers walk ed around they would always stay with our family one day a rap came at the door and mother with flour on her hands called cornel in if youre white but stay out if youre black thinking it one of our neighbors opening the door and laughing a large negro peddler walked in said its only me mo ther for he had stayed many a time no i am certain there is great hospitality on the farms yet to day acton high school news m by nell benton the first month of school is near ly over my how time flies there is how heat in the school and it has surely
