in aclon the day for these services of remembrance will be on friday november 1 1 ll is now 37 years since the close of the first world war and 10 years have passed since a second world war ended both of them left scars which liflve not been entirely healed both of them left memories that many would like to foiqet both of them we hope made impressions on all iwoplt that will prevent further wars from star linn at the remembi ance day seivicf w wi have parades hear messages and oin in song thai will stir the hearts and bring back thoughts ot those who gave their all in a cause foi world free dom some may wonder if those who made iht supreme sacrifice died in vain then maybe those who ponder if freedom has been won and if having been wop at such cost is truly appreciat ed there are as many thoughts and emotions stirred on remembrance day as there are many people not only parlavinq in the services but who hide their emotions and memories away from the public but as we approach remembrance day again we can all give thanks thanks for the present we are enoymg peace that men and women are at work to endeavor to find means of settling our differences without destruction and slaughter and we can make our prayers each in our own way that wars shall be no more remembrance day offers many opportunities far reflection and a time to review our expenenc es of the past and make resolves tor the future it is well to remember if you want to share you ii find notices evtry week in the paper which are placed there for your convenience and quidance an important one for instance at the moment is the one which calls your attention to municipal voters irsts most likely you ii want to participate in the municipal elections therefore your attention is drawn to the fact that your name should be on the voters list when vchi go to the polling booth on election day fhe returning officer is obliged to find your name onthe voters list before he can hand you a ballot paper it doesn t matter if you have lived ti t tor ao oari and yom nimo tor 1 i- among other things which will be presented to acton voters on election day is the band by low in the questions of bigger volume this small item may be overlooked ll might be well to give an explanation in order that voteis may be i irai on thisquestion since back in 1872 acton has always had a band its method of maintenance has been sketchy and insecure at many times we know whereof we speak because for many yrii- we were a member and had the ihily of secretary treasurer of the organization a few yeaisago a by law was passed granting the band a half mill for maintenance as assessment grew a vote iv taken ig reduce the annual grant and niakw it a fixed amount of 500 therein was no obeclion placed by the band and the laoys carried on under increasing expens es now the time has come when many citizens feel that the by law should be restored in order that the band may maintain us position and ser vice to the town and district the band has found that it cannot carry on under the present grant rtnd a vote will be taken at election time to giant the band a half mill each year a vote for this bylaw means to eaih house holder ust 50c a year for every 1000 of assess merit this amouril will assure acton band will be able to keep light on blowing for aclon it means that at puhlic unctions the band will be nhle to paitinpate and be leady the question voters wdl be asked lileially is can ac ton niton i it bt without the html serviies foi the mill t v miuliluit involved in our ilemocialic way inlepaytis ot alton federal government revenue says the financial post back in the far off days ot 1930 says the financial post the provincial governments got 20 per cent of he total ta take of canada the muni cipal governments g6t a shade less than 40 per cent and ottawa just a fraction more tpday the provinces are taking about 17 per cent the mun icipalities about 12 per cent and the federal authootes over 70 per cent at first glance that may look like a pretty raw deal for the untor partners but- much has hap pened since 1930 principally the most expensive war this world has ever witnessed and the m6r
