is one of the most val uable and appreciated nieces of ex tension work beng conducted by the ontario department of agriculture in any event during the past few days several of the dhia mem bers have brought in their individ ual reports and to state they were well pleased with the service is put ting it very mildly at this office we get a summary for each of the three groups the breakdown for each group reveals the following 1 production per cow 2 feeding efficiency 3 labour efficiency 4 capital use 5 size of business under each of the five factors is presented the average for the 24 herds in each group the average figure of the two herds with the high net returns and the average of uie twoherds with the low net re turns in addition each herd owner receives the figure for his own herd with a rating weak average or strong we were interested to note that the average production per cow in the 72 herds is approximately 8735 lbs in the 305 day lactation for the previous year the average produc tion figure for the same 72 herds was 8150 lbs ypknyct hon f s thomas to address haltons seed fair this march the annual seed fair sponsored by the halton soil and crop im provement association is scheduled for milton on march 23 and 24 stat es e ross sefisworth president of ttie association this event always attracts a full house and the as sociation has been successful in securing hon f s thomas minis ter of agriculture for ontarioas guest speaker on the afternoon of saturday march 24th the honorable mr thomas is a native of the streetsville district and consequently has many friends and farmer acquaintances in halton the soil and crop leaders of the halton is accredited as a tbfree area county have revised their prize list considerably with a view to encour d not expire until may and fur thermore the seed offered for sale must be of the same quality and grade as that exhibited in addi tion other classes arc being provid ed with no restrictions on cleaning etc other than that the grain small seeds etc must have been grown by the exhibitor in 1955 in short for these additional classes it is not necessary to have seed etc for sale j intwdertbtie eligible to show this i juniors andii junior farmer judging com petition as usual on the saturday morning au in all with the hon mr thomas as the guest speaker on saturday march 24th the 1956 hal ton seed fair should be best on re cord at a recent livestock meeting in halton the question came up when will halton be due for another gen eral test under the tjb area plan upon investigation we find that the last general test in halton was in 1951 inasmuch as the percentage of reactors did not exceed two- tenths of one per cent halton was then declared an accredited tb free area for a period of six years consequently the accreditation of are eligible to be shipped for export to the us the same as cattle from any other herd in an accredited area as a matter of fact it is pos sible to extend such accreditation for such an additional three year period if there is no indication that tuberculosis is increasing in the event that the three year extension period is not granted then a gene ral retest will likely commence in halton in sufficient time to reac credit the area by 1957 production cost howsvartafioiy we also note that the cost of pro ducing milk in the 72 herds in hal ton in the year ending on april 30th last varies all the way from 250 to 3520 per cwt the average frgure for the entire 72 herds was 366 per cwt tlus figure covers the cost of feed labor overhead veterinary breeding fees milker supplies targeting jees milkhaulages plus the dairy share of t farm taxes hydro and insurance in the case of butter fat the cost of production varies from 76 cents to 153 per pound with the average figure of more interest ed than someone farther away on the other the niners groupoh huron county spoke for nearly a third of the forums when they say that the pressure group is most ef fective adding that they feci con tinuous pressure is needed to get results germans in brant have the same idea when they state that farm organizations should have a planned approach and then go to the govern ment as a pressure group with high pressure then a substantial number of the forums felt that a combination of the two methods would be most likely to get results hampton in durham county think the local mp and ontario members should be made aware of the farmers needs but that the pressure group tech nique must be maintained and is the more effective plum creek in lambton suggest it is not a question of which is the most effective meth od but that we must use all meth ods open to us the forums were also asked in what ways farmers might become more effective in solving their agri cultural problems as individuals and as members of farm organizations as individuals 40 per cent of the groups felt the most important thing was to belong and support a farm organization in addition more than a quarter of the groups thought like west dartford in northumber land that as individuals they should study agricultural problems in or der to deal more intelligently with them then as members of farm organ izations leith forum in grey sum marized the thinking of most when they said the important thing was for farmers to support these organ izations by attending meetings providing finances and supporting previously listed that he gets his cost figure for producing 100 lbs of milk down between the z50 and 300 mark in short it is possible for an operator to be strong on four of the five factors listed and if muth below average on the fifth fiactpr still end up with a losing proposition k or to present it in a different way it would seem that obtaining ave rage efficiency in all five factors leads to lower costs than was ob tained by any group of herds which were the best in any one factor but which may have been low in other factors dairy herd improvement work is a policy only for grade or
