night i had a very restless night not because i couldnt sleep but because every time i got to sleep i was awaken ed again by a strange noise in faet the noise was of two types one a steady sort of purr which i didnt mind the other was inter mittent and resembled the operat ion of a buzzsaw that i couldnt take it would stop and then start stop and start again the intervals between were irregular when all was quiet i wondered how long it would be before it would start again and when the sawing was in progress 1 listened for it to stop one way was as bad as the other sometimes during an extended iiiet spell i dropped off to sleep but only to be awakened again now i give you three guesses radio or television left on no it wasnt that wind rattling the shut ters wrong again partner snor ing oh no he couldnt be that bad then what was it nothing more or less than a small electric bedroom clock just a nice neat little clock not more than six in ches square yini wouldnt think anything so small could make such a noise until a few days ago it was as quiet and wellbehaved as a clock could be then it began a purring sound which wasnt too distracting finally this awful rasp ing noise i listened until it nearly drove me crazy i would have pull ed out the plug immediately ex cept that it iras in a socket under partners bed into which was also plugged the radio and a bedlamp but at long last it had to be done i got up crawled under part ners bed and was in the process of untangling the cords when partner woke iip at least he partially woke up anything wrong he inquired sleepily anything wrong as if i were accustomed to crawl ing under beds in the middle of the night no nothing at all i an swered sweetly just go back to sleep theres nothing to worry about i yanked out the plug somewhat viciously im afraid peace and ipmtness at last and then i slept until daybreak with the dawn we found the ikround covered with snow and big i fluffy white snowflakes still drift- j in down partially covering the rainsoaked fields and decorating i the shrubs and trees we were so disappointed because bob and joy were coming to lake us to visit i friends awav u in the shelbume
