he wiitex- until saturday afternoon when he atternptedwhat seemed to be antaymost routine assignment by attending a buck show a buck show is where owners of male goats bring their beasties to a designated place to be judged by some person who knows a lot about good goats the buck show was held at the home of mr and mrs mac alexander a few miles south- cast of norval mrs alexander is the proud owner of 86 saanen goats this buck show was spon sored by the guelph area group of the ontario dairy goat society for the purpose of bringing togeth er but not too close together ale goats tobe judged by an expert on the animals mrs joan durrant of- markham altogether about 5 people both owners and friends of goats and a lew just curious to find out what a buck show really was attended from such distant places as mark hamrgreenwoodsguetphburling ton hamilton and cainsville as well as a few locals from hornby and xcton one of- the things that hit the writers eye as soon as he arrived at the alexander farm was the booth wheroineals were being sold by the guelph area group the main item on thernenu was bleat- burgers now the writer had a few qualms when he heard one of the ladles behind the counter tell a customer that the meat for these bleatburgers was made from her weefellpws slain when they were nine months old however after gentle persuasion a bleatburger was ordered paid for dosed with the necessary trim mings relish garlic powder cat- sur salt and pepper and again with a few qualms and thoughts of the poor little ninemonthold bcastie eaten surprise came then came the surprise for all the writer might have known it might have been a baaaburghepr in other words a burger made of lamb it tasted just like lamb would have tasted had it been in the same position nestled neatly inside that bun and covered with extras whilst the eating was still in pro gress another customer who had apparently eaten the stuff before remarked that every time she ate bleatburgers they tasted more and more like lamb now the bleatburger might have been a little dry if nothing had been pr to wash it down tea coffee and goats milk was on the menu so why not go the whole hog we mean whole goat could i have a glass of goats milk please the writer queried in a minute he was peering at the milky substance in the paper cup in his hand it looked like ordinary milk so without qualms this time tve took a good big mouth ful nothing seemed unusual we swallowed it nothing unusual yet then after the substance had par tially made its way to the stomach a slight strong taste was noticed so we tried it again the same re sult we concluded that there was nothing different from this milk than the ordinary milk found in any refrigerator except for the faint different taste in the throat after it had been swallowed xo top it off pie and ice cream marie writh cows milk rounded out the meal the price 15c for the burger 5c tor the milk and ioc for the pie and cows milk ire cream a very inexpensive meal to put down on the expense sheet glancing around whilst we ate we found more and more people arriving most of them known to somebody in the place and must of them enjoying a blcatburgcr and a glass of m a cup of coffee with goats milk in it while they waited for the show to start soon the show did start and mrs alexander introduced the judge the judge very carefully inspected imtt- often ran her expert hands over various parts of the bucks being shown and after announcing her decision gave the reasons tor her choices here came another interesting part of the show we were uoat goats are judged on their over- all condition the bloom on the coat the sue and shape of the chin and head the finish the conditioning the heartijirth the spread of the toes the straightness of the piist- ems the space between the rib and the level- of the croop still with us we were lost later because of the shortage of male goats at the judging show fe male gloats- or does were brought out of wrs alexanders pens they were judged too and the only dif ference ir judging was the udder attachment during the- show one of the most unusual things happened a doe got out in the pasture was due to have kids t thats thc correct word by the way so- she was brought into her pen in the huje barn which houses jersey cattle as well as goats in 10 minutes some one came running into the judging yard to spread the word that mom ma had riven birth to triplets nat urally the show was held up while most of the audience inspected the new arrivals at the start of the snow mrs alexander had 83 goats within one hour the- total had climbed to as well as the judging by mrs xhixrant the audience got a chance to do some judging themselves poor doe goats were brought out on two different occasions and ev eryone way given a judging card to pick tneir gosk in the order in which they thought would win staff photographer had his eyes opened when he attended the buck judging show recently at mac alexanders at norval and was urged to partake of a cool glass of glfets milk from the alexander goats and a bleatburger the same thing as a hamburger only made out of the meat of goats however he tried one of both and enjoed it the above pictures taken at the show in dicate just part of the goingson during the afternoonlong show judged by mrs joan durrant qt markham a group of about 50 goat owners attended televize town coast tq coast georgetown was publicized on the national tv network recently when graphic took viewers on a tour of rex heslops home while joe mcculley interviewed mr hes lop described as a construction mil lionaire who builds whole- cities mr heslop was first pictured sit ting in the living room of his home and answered questions about his career from the time he built his first house in 1943 to his latest 2000 acre delrex projebt joined by mrs heslop he then proceeded to the downstairs rec reation room where viewers had a glimpse of the junior soda bar cains- ville in the yearling milker cla wee miss hunter everyone assum ed must have won the competition on a lucky guess the alexander bucks won two of the four competition prizes while the goats of mrs charles easter of hamilton and mrs jean laports of cainsville each won one prize the prizes n lead chain some goat feed blocks of salt and a box of flvvkuucr seemed very appropriate following the show musical enter tainment was given by miss sandra tisdale and miss catherine hunter margaret alexander 13 won a t halter and chain for her essay on i how i earned my first kid she has been a great help to mrs al- j exarider in looking after the daily milking of the goats i goats are very valuable animals well skip the old joke about not i having to buy a lawn mower when you have goats around and inform the reader that goats today are worth between s40 and 50 if you want to buy a milking doe goats milk is often recommended for babies who have troubl digesting cows milk the milk sells for about 5lc a quart clean animals goats are very clean animals too they are the cleanest animals on the farm mrs alexander asserts if their feeds gets dirty they will not eat it pigs and cattle relish what the goats refuse the writer doubted this until it was explained to him as before the show- got un- j derway while trying to make j frieridiv conversation with a group j of seven lilywhite goats tied in a pen he almost lost a few fingers after that experience he thought j they would eat anything put near them but soon learned differently j the bleat burgers referred to j before could also be called chevon burgers cltevon is the fancy name for goats meat used by fancier people than the ones who raise goats as for the milk goats milk is an alkaline milk thus the stronger taste than cows milk it is used in many case of arthritis exrema and stomach ulcers it also has natural fluorine that helps bones and teeth it is very easily digested since it is naturally homogenized to sum it up
