experience for guests an event that was most enjoy able as well as unique and novel was experienced by the men and women residents of halton manor on wednesday afternoon of last week when the hornby womens institute held a picnic for them at the hornby school grounds this picnic was unique in that it was the first picnic ever to have been attended by the residents as a group since halton manor was op- dened over four years ago about 40 residents and members of the staff attended this pleasant affair and they were transported from the manor to the hornby school in a chartered bus upon arriving at the school grounds the visitors were given a warmwelcome by mrs w coulton the second vicepresident in the absen of th p mrst rt king mrs coulton was followed by mrs delbert downs who acted as program chairman to introduce a very interesting and varied pro gram mrs downs explained that part of the program would be giv en by the hornby cerealettes 4h crib the first number on the program entitled the cereal shelf explained the nutritional value of several cer eals and described the variety they add to our daily meals this ex planation was given by means of a decorated table showing various cereals and bakeproducts made from them and also by means of an informative commentary by pat hamilton before the next number on the program was given the presentat ion of a gift was made to margaret stark who expects to enter the brantford hospital school of nurs ing in september the presentation was made by marilyn leslie the next item on the program was a sewing skit presented by pat were entertained and of the new friendships formed following this fine address a number of sports events for the young girls present took place they were directed by margaret stark and audrey peacock and provided much amusement for the spectators at intervals during these sports events a number of prizes were given to the guests from the man or the prizefor the oldest gentle man present went to mr wm leg- gatt of oakville and for the oldest lady present to mrs m musselle and mrs a t brown both of whom are acton ladles before entering the school grounds each guest had been pre sented with a flower corsage bear ing a number and when a lucky draw based on these numbers was conducted the prize winners were mrs olive howard miss clara sutton and mr w hughes resid ents and mrs d roberts rn of the nursing staff in a contest for the women guests only miss harriet metcalfe won afprize for having the straight- est seams in her stockings mrs swann and mr morrison won prizes for the lady and gentle man having birthdays nearest to august 8 following all these events a very plentiful and very delicious picnic supper was served during which all present enjoyed to the full the sandwiches confectionery ice cream lemonade and tea that were served a singsong led by mrs p mer ry brought this delightful afternoon to a close after which mrs eric clarke matron of halton manor expressed the highly respected former citizen of acton and milton mrs w h stewart passed away on monday august 6th in toronto in her 80th year she had been in failing health for the past several years in spite of her advanced years she maintained a keen in terest in current events and the activities of her family and friends born in eliina township ontario in 1867 mary richmond was a daughter of the late margaret kennedy and george richmond she was the last remaining mem ber of her family of three sisters and four brothers she was married in 1899 to the late william henry stewait arid came to acton in 1903 when mr stevtart accepted the position of principal of the acton public and continuation school he left this lposition in 1920 tobecome ghilo rens aid superintendent for the counties of halton and peel when the family moved to milton after mr stewarts death in 1929 mrs stewart made her home in toronto mrs stewart was active in the work of the methodist latterly the united church as a young girl she was organist and bible class teacher of her home church she taught sunday school was an active member of the womans mission ary society and never missed a church service as long as her health permitted she was made an honor ary member of acton wms when she left for milton in former years she was a very active member of the iode and womens institute she is survived by three daugh ters and three sons marguerite a former teacher is the wife o roy j brown formerly of acton the vicepresident of the moloney el ectric co toronto also a former teacher mary is married to the viceprincipal of general mercer school william r sinclair elsie k stewart is on the staff of jesse ketchum school toronto bill stewart is a high school inspector for the province of ontario and bob stewart is
