thetlrst memorliervlce there on sunday afternoon august la nathaniel roszell a native of pennsylvania was the first settler in erin township mr root said he came with his family from smith ville in november 1821 and set tied on lot one between the sixth and seventh line whore the hamlet of ballinafad later sprang up benjamin roszell was the first white child born in grin township the date of his birth being novem ber it 1821 the first revival meeting of the settler was held in mr roszells home josephhilts with his brother william moved into the northern part of esquosing aoout the same dublin institute plans for fairs the dublin womens institute held its july meeting recently at the home of mrs winner watkins mill st after the usual opening ex ercises the roll call was responded to by the members giving their birth month and flower mrs william mclntyre president was in the chair and the secretary mrs alex near read the minutes of the previous meeting mrs g r somerville gave a brief resume of attending a tea in toronto recently when winners in the salada tea handicrafts competition for worn cnsjinstitute members of ontario as fall fairs are in the next month arrangements were made for displays of canned foods aprons and other entries girls 4h club will also have a display mrs james van fleet mrs rennick mrs kennedy and mrs near were nam ed a committee to attend to the ar holiday week at the oac guelph which she and five other ladies from acton had enjoyed a dainty lunch was served by the hostess assisted by mrs p ken nedy mrs mcphedran and mrs charles davidson mrs adjoining one another on the tow n line rev joseph hilts son of william hilts wrote in one of his books the following about four years after the founding of the settle- ment the scattered population con cluded to put up a log building that would serve the double pur pose of school and meetinghouse they held a meeting andlaid their plans and in a short time a very comfortable school was ready for use on the corner of nathaniel roszells farm just across the road from where the store now stands in this school religious services were held for a number of years mr roszell also gave land for a cemetery a church a temperance hall and a parsonage one way and another this good man gave to the public and to the lord nearly half of the front of 100 acres a daughter of one of the pupils of that log school has a picture of it with the teacher and pupils mr heyland was a methodist and the first minister to hold services in that school mr pitcher was the first school master and he with his son peter boarded with the various families his salary which was small was a stated sum for each pupil the three rs were taught and many amusing stories could be told of incidents which occurred one was that when the master oc casionally fell asleep in his chair his son did his best to keep order this school was started about 1825 or 1826 about 1869 this school was closed and those on the erin side went to school at peacock corners and those in esquesing to blue moun tain in the early days land for the cemetery was given by mr roszell but in 1845 a meeting was called for the purpose of appointing trus tees on may 9 1845 a deed was drawn up between nathaniel ros zell and his wife hannah and the three trustees in the township of erin in the county of waterloo in wellington district and the prov ince of canada the names of the trustees were obadiah roy arch ibald patterson and joseph hilts witnesses were donald mcbain and arthur thompson the sum of five shillings was paid for theland the first church to be built was the methodist just west of the cem etery in the year 1841 near it was the temperance hall which is a very old building mr root ex plained a short distance west of it land was given for a parsonage which in later years was the property owned by the late duncan fergus on rev tyndal his wife and fam ily lived there for a number of years the old house being a bit west of the present one other land was also given or sold by mr roszell above the cemetery on the seventh line abraham buck was among the early setters of ballinafad vicin ity william havens was another nnd he was appointed clerk of the local municipality thomas merry a native of the emerald isle is credited with giv ing ballinafad its name a mr hopkins was appointed first tax collector in 1824 mr and mrs nathaniel roszell were buried on the eastern side of the cemetery and their graves are marked by two white stones bishop wesley warne was a nat ive of erin township he was a missionary the tact of the printed here story is re- like a scene from a pioneer picture book the little village of eden mills nestles on the banks of the eramosa river seven miles east of acton charm of buildings picturesque in every detail of its sylvan setting the old stone build ings lend a charm to the scene the area first became a settle ment in 1842 when daniel and aaron kribs purchased the land to build a mill the little settlement became known as kribs mills but was later renamed eden by adam ille residence formerly the eden l argo who jdurchased the land in 1846 since its inception life of the village has centred around the old water powered mill the land was first purchased by the krib broth ers after a survey of the eramosa river at the site where the mill is located they found a fall of some eight feet in the river bed and set to work immediately to build the dam which was completed in oct ober of 1842 the mill was constructed during the same period and was ready for operation at that time the original mill was believed to have been frame the present stone building was built in 1856 and was purchas ed by its present owner henry barden in 1917 for many years it was used for the grinding of flour but in 1929 was converted to a saw mill now sawing mill power for the mill is derived from a 24inch water wheel set in the mill race turned by water force alone it delivers 32 6 horse power to run the 24inch saw and other machinery mr barden said the mill was converted to sawing because of the shortage of wheat in the area and a scarcity of trucks to haul it from any distance stone buildings predominate in the village among them marshalls general store and the lloyd nev- mills hotel marshalls store is a threestorey stone building built in 1873 by samuel meadows who was postmas ter at that time the building has been a store and post office since the present owner and postmaster n s marshall is a descendant of of the area his margaret ramsay born m 1824 was the first white early pioneers grandmother baby born in eramosa township the neville residence was built in 1867 as the eden mills hotel it was a 12room structure with a ballroom on the second floor typ ical of similar establishments of the day the hotel sold wines and liquors the trap door coverd chute on the verandah for loading these necessities in the basement still exists the building has been altered considerably in late years when it was converted to a resid ence have lighted ball park always a progressive municipal ity village folk have been active through the years among the vil lages many attractions are a flood lit ball park and the mill pond which provides excellent swimming facilities the village itself is div ided geographically of its total ar ea 300 acres
