recently scanning the slttu scene with hartley coles long suffering hockey fans from this district will have to suffer in silence again this sea son there will be no intermediate hockey here for them to enthuse about and unless someone puts a time bomb behind a movement u install artificial ice in the towns rapidly decaying ice palace theres littl likelihood of anything but minor hockey here for the forseeable future to keep pace with the highly competitive brand of hockey played in this neck of the woods by neigh- oring towns four things would be necessary 1 artificial ice 2 good imported players 3 good home brew players 4 an executive with plenty of intestinal fortitude it is obvious at the present time that acton has none of these requis ites hockey fans will just have to shed their aggressions on minor hockey or on what promises to be a crack junior team representing this burgh this semester however you can put away the crying towels few of the fans will miss their hockey within i few minutes drive of acton either in milton georgetown or guelph one can enjoy sen ior b hockey of high calibre a jaunt to guelph and the oha junior a probably the fastest most exciting brand of hockey played is in full swing with the guelph bilt- mores a strong entry and how about those pro games on the magic lantern every satur day night surely the wife will let ou tune in the set one night a week you may not like the to rontos rock and roll crew cuts but there you can see even the mont real canadiens tsont la on oc casion thats one advantage of life in the centre of progress it surely cant be as some super ficial wag remarked the progress it seems is going on all around us w take the minor hockey enthus iasts they couldnt be happier than with the present situation unlike their counterparts in neigh boring towns the minor sports as sociation does not have to beg for ice time i the kids in this town have two full nights a week in the arena for tree in that time nearly 150 boys compete in a town league that gives all the boys a chance to play in addition entries in the omh a are also granted the arena for games on a fee basis that is gratify ing to the extreme all this is granted by the simple expedient of asking the town fathers each year for the use of the arena if artificial ice was installed many of these activities would have to be curtailed or cut down in time its an expensive proposition to use artificial arenas and adequate re venue would have to be forthcom ing to help the kids out and there- is where the boys in this town would lose out as you can see there are two sides to the question you can weigh them in the balance and de cide for yourself who stands to lose the most the kids or the fans the tragic death of lome blas ters came as a shock to the sports fraternity he was the third member of the cha baseball teams of the postwar era to die in a highway accident peewee as he was known when hcp uito mediates had few equals in county baseball when it came to covering the hot corner he was also adept with the bat and as leadoff hitter probably garnered more walks to first than any other player m thisfquires that the cub know how to towns baseball history we followed him when he enjoy ed his best playing years and he gained the respect and admiration of his opponents with hisvdeter- mination to succeed in spite of diminutive stature
