th acton fts press thursday december 20th 1956 v brucellosis free area predicted here by 60 us price parity is topic this past week we were inter ested to learn from w p watson livestock commissioner for ontar io that in the first ten months of 1956 a total of 43190 head of cattle mostly diary cattle had been sold for export this looks like around 50000 head for the year and we imagine that 15 million dollars would be a conservative estimate of their sales value with health regulations tightening up constantly rn the us it would ap pear that the importance of retain ing this market for our surplus cattle would be one of the chief reasons why the ontario govern ment under the new brucellosis act is undertaking to pay the bill for calfhood vaccination in this province braeellasis free areas a program is under way in us to make all states in the union certified brucellosis free by 1960 already some four states have been so declared consequently in order that ontario may retain this market it is essential that we place our houses in order vac cination of all female calves is the first step and there can be no excuse now for any halton rattle owner not complying with the reg ulations by 1960 we anticipate that the cattle owners of halton which county is now known as a super vised area under the brucellosis act of 1956 will have the oppor tunity of deciding whether or not this is the intriguing topic which will be discussed by dr ii l patterson head of the farm ec onomics branch of the ontario de partment of agriculture at the an nual meeting of the halton soil and crop improvement associat ion in a recent conversation with e ross segsworth president of the halton association we learned that the event issrieduled for the main building at the milton fair grounds on thursday december ti as in former years the program will get under way at 1030 am when local cooperators will pre sent brief reports then follows the luncheon for which the ladies of the scotch block wi have gained an enviable reputation the afternoon session starts off with a panel discussion entitled j economic production on this pan el the committee in charge has al ready secured acceptance from j- m fraser noted holstein breeder j of huttonville an effort is also be ing made to secure- n j thomas outstanding soils authority to sit on the same panel incidentally mr thomas recently attended an international grassland conference in new zealand in addition on the panel there will be at least two of j they wish the county to become halton s top farm operators i known as a certified brucellwis what we actually started out to free area that in our opinion write was something on parity would mean a test and slaughter prices but why should we when halton folk generally and that includes the county press arc to have an opportunity of hearing dr howard patterson discuss the topic new heating unit yes folks the directorate of the halton agricultural society has in stalled a heating unit in the main hall at the fair grounds so there is accommodation for all and ample parking facilities and no parking meters either october as we interpreted mr watsons comments the approp riation voted by the ontario legis lature for the brucellosis program will not at the present time permit accepting any further applications from other areas of the province halton cattle owners therefore arc in a preferred position restriction against movement halton cattle owners contemp lating the purchase of cattle from outside the county would be well advised prior to such action to contact either the agricultural office in milton or their own vet erinarian in brief cattle from other areas can be brought in but a permit should be obtained from a veterin arian there are no restrictions against the movement of steers bulls or heifer calves under eight months of age furthermore vac cinated females between the agra of eight to 36 months may also be brought in without restriction however it is impossible in this brief article to outline all of the regulations so all we can do is suggest that those contemplating purchases of cattle from outside of halton should make a few inquir ies first frankly we believe the policy sound jind in the interests of every cattle owner art has teeth in passing perhaps we should add that the brucellosis act pro vides for the prosecution of any cattle owner in halton or other supervised areas who fails to comply with the regulations personally we would be sorry exchange of gifts slides highlights gifts were exchanged when members of the lakeside chapter iode- held their christmas meeting in the legion hall last week carols added to the christ mas theme mrs a buchanan showed slides of her trip to eur ope and commentated most in formatively business was discussed win the regent mrs sonny jocque in the chair refreshments concluded the meeting program a spot check test made to sco or hear of halton cattle kingsway kiwanians entertain halton jrs for the ninth consecutive year the kingsway kiwanians enter tained a goodly group of halton juniors to a noonday luncheon at the old mill toronto on mon- of last week john lloyd and the members of his agricultural committee of the kingsway kiwanis had gone all out to make it a memorable occas ion the guest speaker was james d moore secretarymanager of the canadian council on 4h clubs with headquarters at ottawa among the special guests were frank wolfe agricultural agent for the cpr l c roy agricult ural agent cnr earl manning of the meat packers council to ronto r g bennett associate director of extension ontario de partment of agriculture toronto all of whom are members of the 4h canadian council we were interested to learn from mr moore that 73000 club members were en rolled in 5000 4h clubs in can- ada in 1956 also that there are over three million members en- rolled in 4h club work in 43 countries of the world the following 4h club members from halton were presented with awards allen bowen don moffat ross austin george grecnlees philip shepherd david hume ron lee bill marshall sandy barnes mervin colling glenna rose and marilyn wrigglesworth the young men were each awarded a short course scholar- j ship at the ontario agricultural college while the two young lad- ies presented with awards of equal value among the guests from halton were also roy ford mac sprpwl and lloyd vivian mrs mabel by health of animals inspectors revealed that on the average 36 per cent of our cattle are positive to the test and another one per cent are suspicious in another three years of calfhood vaccination it should be possible to get the percentage of reactors down to perhaps one per cent this would mean that a test and slaughter program would be practical advise listing while we personally have been lukewarm on advising our pure bred breeders to enter their herds under the federal governments brucellosis listed herd policy we can now see why it would be sound business for our pure bred breeders to give immediate con sideration to this policy that is if they want to retain a market for their surplus cattle in the us speeds up vaccination the new brucellosis act as of october 1 1956 has resulted in 8000 more calves being vaccinated in october in the present super vised areas than in any previous borgstrom home economist for halton peel and york counties a t woodley chairman of haltons advisory council on 4h agricult ural clubs a g bennett associate agricultural representative for halton and peel counties and j e- whitelock owner being prosecuted and fined for failure to live up to the regul ations and remember under the law ignorance is no excuse so we would suggest to our readers that if they know of a neighbor who is not having his female calves vaccinated when they are between the ages of four and eight months inclusive they would be doing such neighbor a kind act to bring the brucellosis act to his attention in our opinion it is def initely in the interest of every cattle owner to vaccinate his hei fer calves the cost is paid by the government so there can be no ex cuse for failure to do so knox wms holds christmas meeting mrs pearl kennedy was in charge of the worship service for the christmas meeting of the senior auxiliary of the womens missionary society of knox pres byterian church
