bennett who passed away before completing her term losing or gaining recently we have spent some leisure hours which were heretofore not available in watching television even the commercials which are by many contidered a necessary nuisance to provide for the program bring interesting comparisons of the present and other days many of us whoae early days saw only two kinds of soap in the home oft soap and bars of laundry toapwonder at th rray and the clatmt of the methodt to keep hum ant and clothe clean and healthy wonder how we urvived those of us who use raz or which employ shaving brush lather end a sh cutti blade lookin wonder at the contraptions that are supposed to gel hair removed above and below the skin or are guaranteed to- shave a peach when you no longer think of yourself as a peach yes the day is full of modern miracles but with the advancement we lose some things too remember those days when the shelves in the barber shops used to hold an arry of shaving mug with names and fancy initials thereon recall thoae day when you lay back nd rested t ihe barber gently and skill fully removed your beard and you dozed a bit under the hot towels and were kept up- todate with the lataxt town newt and dit cuuton parhapa your barber had bck room or an extra space that provided tpittoonsnd an almntrihere where rmtqhhnrry rlnfiiumn bright in outlook whether lfbe cards tea leaves or pilm ittry gaiing4nto ihe cryttal ball and attempt ing to peer into the future it something hut is somehow eftactive evan the weather of the next day or the next season it something that attracts the human race if the future i painted at being roty it it particularly gratify- ma perhaps tht it why the recent report of the gordon commission which look lo the next quarter century in canada end he made several prophecies it pleating to moll canadians but the gordon- report it not backedby cetdt or tea leaves butjjy a year iandta hair of careful study across canada it it not a prediction of one man but several milt by 750 indivvfbatvndanres organ nations etc the interim report and its re commendations call for much thought and study before rash conclusions are made having seen the enpansion of canada ewer ihe last quarter century the predictions for ihe net 25 years do not seem unrealistic at any rate use nice future to have before us it s more than a picture it s e goel to ktrive for or even to exceed the fulfillment of ft forecast will require a struggle and some disappointments all along ihe way that it what history he taught but the future is bright indeed for this great domin ion of canada consider parents t in the light o incident occurring in com munitim scroti the country parents generally ihould be keenly interested in and in the exercise of proper parental supervision and control of boys and girls m the home it is surprising the number of teachers who claim that they are beinp called on to teach and train children of today in the fundamentals of life which should be taught m the home it is stated that many parents send their children to sunday school and church because they know it is the right thing lo do but they themselves fail to set the example and hund reds of them never darven the door of a church there are parents who ijoltevc they boys should engage in minor hockey or little league baseball but never attend o game to see how they are getting along these par ents leave the training of their offspring in the hands of others there are parents who would not mus sending their boys and girls to the meetings of scouts and guides but they never follow up by meeting the leaders or taking an in terest in the organization there ate parents who hand out weekly allowances to their family and allow boys and girls to buy whatever they want without showing any interest in what the allowance i being used for there is at limes talk of i u von tie delinquents when as a matter of fact people in authority claim there are mot de imquent parents than children cleanup memories going more thoroughly through our desk than usual we found many things which were useless today but were considered valuable a few years ago there was a gas ration book with three unused coupons they were only i i years old next we came upon several forms which set up the amount of newsprint we were allowed for a year it was useless today but very necessary back in j943 there weffl several permits and licenses no longer needed to carry on business then there was a letter dated 1942 in which a mother told of her husband going to the east coast and she presumed she would not see him again before he went overseas i ii sun be glad when this war is over it concluded just a memory now of course there were other items that went to the wastebasket in the clean up of the desk with them there went a feeling of thankful ness that the governments talked their way out of the latest crisis instead of fighting their way out brief comment the good old
