time is running short for the happy breed of warriors known a ice fishermen the warming sun and the winds of march will soon lake iheir toll on the lakes and rivers honeycombing the ice and breaking it up into clangorous floes ice fishermen have been much in the news since early winter when a half doen huts from the tommycod waters 50 milet up stream v ere seen floating past quebec on the si invsrence river tide the huts were empty but thrv were evidence of the part the wea iher plays on ice fishing the summer angler worries about his tickle and hs bait the horse power of his motor and sometimes black flies and mo quiloes in winter all these worries are sec ond uy to the elements and their effects some of the most exciting stones every winter concern fishermen first it is ihose who try to force the icason and lose their cars and maybe iheir lives by driving across ice loo thin then come the scores of men and women marooned on lakes by blizzards that trap snt to every citizen of h community and the nation the budget of the red cross for 1953 it a i a roe one and there i only one source for the monoy to allow the canadian red cross society to meet its humanitarian obligations fcr another year that money must be provid ed through he generosity of the people of canada the canadian red cross means many things to many people in most provinces the red cross means free blocd transfusions for everyone when d taster strikes at home or in any pari of the world wt know the red cross will be on the job domg the things we would like to ho if we had the opportunity in remote areas of our vast land a string of fled cros outpost hospitals and nursing stations provide care and treatment through our red cross we are assured that our veterans are not forgotten men and women they receive regular vinls see cur rent movies enjoy the plweiant atmosphere of red cross lodges and spend hour that would normally hang heavy over their heads in the pleasant pursuit of the arts and crafts programme through the junior ctd cross our school children are learning to become telter citi ens and gaining n understanding of iheir counterparts throughout the world here in our community the red cfoss means many more a ts of l mdness and help for our citiens tins year the canadian red cross will again have mc r eased obligations an m creasing population always presents a thai lenge which seems to be regarded as a weakness m our educational system artcf the oilier countries have now proven our physical incapabilities through standard tests but the hamilton associate y director who conducted the e pen merits points out that ironically children who are enrolled in y classes ostensibly to keep them fit are often driven to the y by parents instead of taking the walk to and from the building the measure of physical fitness of sue ceeding generations has always been regard ed with alarm but perhaps before we pass completely into the push button era we should look ot our own are ihe exceptions and for every fisherman m the news there are hundreds of others who sit quietly beside sputtering smoky oil stoves regularly bring ing in thoir quota of pet its poissons or
