smoke clears for year ahead the election smoke of the municipal con test has settled and those named to the towns administration groups can prepare for the year ahead they have our congratula tions on being chosen by the citizens of town for positions of responsibility as is customary in ahy competition there havebeerhoser and we feel that they also deserve congratulations first for their offer to accept responsibility and second for their interests in civic matters mayor w h cook will again head the town council and be m a position to complete the integration of the own and public utili ties departments under the civic admmistra tion plan unveiled a short lime ago as acton goes into a new decada there is undoubtedly much to be done and in the interests of economy little with which to do it therein lies one of the greatest challenges those elected will face a good public officia the following gleaned from the new hampshire municipal association news letter enumerates the rules one must fol low for the making of a good public official it seemed timely during th election season 1 don l act as a committee of one re member that your only authority lies in your membership on t board or council 2 devote sufftent time and energy to your ob if you find that your private busi ness social hfe or health make it impossible to carry out your obligations step aside for someone else 3 don t use your official position for personal gam or to promote your own in terests disqualify yourself if your board or council is considering a matter in which you have a personal interest l 4 don t let honest differences of opm ion degenerate into personality conflicts 5 visit other communities particularly those that have the reputation of being well run if your community is about to undertake a special proiect inspect similar proiects in other communities 6 keep the public informed issue fre quent news relases accept invitations to speak before local groups hold open meet ings issue an attractive readable annual report 7 never make a promise to an mdivi dual or group unless you are absolutely cer lain you can carry it out 8 never accept gifts or favors from m dividuals or firms doing business with your community 9 represent all the people in your com the good old days w if back in 1939 probably the greatest municipal change that those elected will face is the disappear ance of the public utilities commission and its replacement with the hydro electric com mission to handle power with the sewer and water departments being incorporaled in the town works program while we have editor- tally oppos this dissolution since itw firs suggested we sincerely hope it will work out because of the faith electors had last december in approving the move acton in 160 will have a different type of high school board too known as the ac ton district high school board with township and town representatives oined to adminis ter the acton school only we have recently supported this plan and feel certain it will work out to be an advantageous move for the local school our greeting might best be summed up after the settling of election smoke as good administration to those elected
