jrtstai lff mk rfeal tw crat a deficit it is encouraging to learn that the de partment of highways pmkfcf w4ll 6vv 46006 trees in t960 along th prwiwcit highways it is unfortunate that our mun icipalities have not undertaken similar pro grams to plant trees in areas where they would be an added altractlon in a few years tree saving is important too and the department suceeisfully removed and re planted nearly 1800 trees many of which were mature trees up to 3d feet in height the work was possible because of the uae of the departrawnv tree saver the only one in canada otherwise the trees would have been destroyed during highway construc tion besides the scotch pine maple and other varieties the department is planting orna mental trees that can be dlspliyd to ad vantage such a flowering erb barbevry lilac honeysuckle silver birch weeping willow and other eyecatching varieties the planting of the trees and shrubs is augmented by the planting of grass along the highways last year almost 6000 acres were grass seeded using a new mechanical seeckncj method whereby the grass seed is sprayed over the area mechanical grass seeding is carried out by teams of one hy draulic seeder with one or more blowers one spitays i a mixture of grass scod and fertilizer and one follows- andcovers lho area with a mixture of straw and tin asphalt emulsion which holds jhe seed until the grass has takdn root and turf been created all of this is encouraging it is surely setting an example too to municipalities that havent planted tree in the last decade despite the removal of a number of them if we lose sight of the beauty that trees and welt kept park and grass areas can 6ffer there may be a whole generation fol lowing that will be left with the tree deficit we are creating lets cut the toll each year more than 66 000 canadian homes are damaged by fire an average of 160 fires every day property loss is ev limited at 27000000 of the 400 canadians who wilt die in residential fires each yean about half are children home fires can be prevented and the following precautions are especially ap plicable at this time of year 1 remove matches and other mflam- ables from the pockets of winter garments before tionng 2 clean out attics basements sheds garages and other areas where rubbish may have accumulated 3 use non inflammable fluids for clean ing floors and clothing do not use gasoline or similar volatile fluids 4 oily rags or rags soaked in turpen tine or other fluids should be destroyed dr kept in sealed metal containers 5 winter heating materials oil kero sene etc should be kept at minimum level during summer months 6 chimneys and furnaces should be cleaned thoroughly 7 check fans air conditioners and sim ilar summer appliances for frayed cords or loose connections 8 remove accumulated leaves from eaves and around base of homes stand and be counted without question the best aid that the west can give the people of the underde veloped countries is to help people there to help themselves in a modest but not insignificant way some canadians are ready to do just that the operation called can adjen overseas volunteers is privately fin anoad and will snd young canadians to cey ion india and sarawak for one year to teach and give technical assistance ten university of toronto students have already been chos en ten more will be selected from laval university in montreal the plan was conceived by a university of toronto graduate keith sptcer who spent some months in asia on a canada council grant studying the effects of canadian for eign aid the 10 toronto students have com pteted ar eight week language course will work under asian supervisors and be paid at prevailing wage rates cost of the plan i 2 000 per volunteer most of which will pc frx travel expense fred stmson mem br o parliament for york centre is in c large of the fund raising and contributions to date have included 2 000 donations from the united church the toronto star and im penal oil limited keith spicers scheme is not unlike pres ident kennedy peace corps plan although en fact it seems as though our privately sponsored volunteers might be in the field before kennedy s government sponsored vol unteers are dispatched overseas perhaps our program has the added advantage that iti will be free of the commun st inspired charge that the americans will be imperial ist propagandists or espionage agents to spike such obstruction st talk presi dent kennedy has suggested that other countries work through the un ted nations to cooperate in the effort if the canadinn program can be expanded we might be wise to tie in with that suggestion certain ly this is one area where it w ii serve good purpose to stand and be counted as i bucktr of u s policy the policing of
