maple rock trap shooters have issued a challenge to the hal ton sportsmens association toll trap shooting competition club mcitibr jim coulson bud webster ray post and paul waddell took an unsuccessful duck hunting trip lat weekend our reapers write home contest to whom it may concern the chamber of commerce is a very good organization and try to do things for he better ment of the town in which peo ple make their homes therefore they arc notthe cause for these few lines in regard to the home improvement contest which was held but i do think the judging was a little bit onesided with ah three homes receiving prizes in one block in a relatively new area of town also in that way it does not give much in centive to the homeowners in the rest of the town with older homes one home i am refer ring to which was entered in the contest is on our street the owners certainly worked hard and long at making their home more beautiful if you had seen this home before they started at it 1 think you would agree with me that ihey were entitled to a prize or at least an honorable mention this is just a line or two to say what all they did cut out a lot of cedar trees which had orrot sds alt around theirbacklawn front and side of the house made a gravel driveway with cement curbs new cement steps and walk to the street raised their porch and painted the house and also the fence ah of these things certainly im proved the appearance of their home an interested homeowner to holland marsh and tho not tawasaga river although ihey reported seeing plenty of ducks other hunters- were shooting at highflying birds and none came within shotgun range the competitive shooters at maple rock shooting range have formed a club the dub has been named maple rock trap team the first meeting was held tuesday evening of this week ian executive was elected and ihey are president jim coulson vicepresident wayne leadston and secretary treasurer art hawes it was decided to hold a draw to raise funds details on- the draw wiu appear in a later issue next meeting will be monday evening october 17 at 730 pm we have received word from the ontario department of lands and forests that no pheasant stocking has taken place in halton county for the past two years as the townships have been unable to find anyone who wants to raise them we have been told the pur pose of the township hunting licences is to raise funds to stock pheasants if this is the case the department lands and forests information leaves us to wonder what this money lias been spent on over the past t years 4 seek tuesday of last week the rev a h mc- kenzie of acton was elected moderator of the presbytery the meeting was held in burns presbyterian church erin at tended toy representatives oh about 30 congregations includ ing acton milton orangevillc brampton port credit oakville georgetown campbcllville erin hillsburg caledon clark son erindale streetsville and other centres as moderator mr mckenzie will preside art regular and pro re nata meetings of presbytery will conduct inductions take part in dedications and consider other business of presbytery he will attend a variety of func tions in his new capacity his term i for one year and he replaces the first moderator iof the brampton presbytery the rev robert g macmillan of oakville this is just the second year of operation since this new presbytery was formed in 11 1 mr mckenzie was moderator of guelph presbytery when acton was in that district and was moderator of w onto presbytery in 1955 thisweckend the duck season opens in this area and with it will likely be the start of the usual hunting accidents it is unfortunate that there are hunt ing accidents especially since most of rhem are caused by carelessness hunting accidents are not overly numerous but they cause a great uproar every year the reason for this is hard to under stand more people arc killed in canada in automobile accidents in one long weekend in rhe sum mer than in two years hunting accidents noo wartlscars banned yet many would nice to eliminate firearms from can ada to coin an old phrase people are funny with the duck season opening on saturday many serious hunt ers will come home discouraged and disgusted because of the tnconsideratlion of other hunt ers there will be the usual num ber of onceayear hunters on hand who will shoot at any duck they see within a mile the re sult is that the duck will not come near the hunters this is especially discouraging to hunt ers who only shoot at ducks that are close enough to be sure of a clean kill chances are that rhe ducks would come within range if these hunters would hold their fire their chief concern seems to be to shoot off a lot of shells and have a roaring time so they can go back home and hang their guns up for another year the other cause of dismay is the hunter who decides he wants to take up a station a few feet from another party this type of hunter it seems cant bear to be more than a few feet from another person even while hunting and thinks he has as much right there as the first party the code of honor among most hunters is to keep clear of an area already occupied by other hunters we dont think this year will prove any better than others in fact it will likely be worse but we can always hope for the day we can go hunting without this display of lack of manners among some hunters date for high school com mencement is set for friday november 4 motorists are anxiously awaiting the unveiling of the new 1967 model cars amalgamation continued fixm prije
