c ftie acton free press thursday october 97 1966 pounding tli sports beat what do vou do when you cant sleep count sheep take a sleeping pill walk the floor these measures are designed to lull you back into dream land so you can be fresh and eager to go the next day a friend of mine couldnt find a remedy so he sat down and wrote a letter in the dead of night to the people who were causing him the concern that wouldnt let him sleep the subject was hockey it concerned the perennially thorny issue of whether the large towns and cities should be playing kmall centres like acton in the tricounty hockey setup this is something thats been bothering hockey circles here for some lime i think the minor hockey men felt the problem had been resolved this season apparently it hasnt it bothered barry inscoe so much the other night he put his thoughts on paper made copies for mailing to those interested and posted ihem before anyone could change his mind the birds were still dozing heres what he wrote oct 25 1966 dear sir i have just received the first part of tny tricounty minor hockey association schedule which includes games up to november 5 1966 to my amazement i see the tcmha has again pitted the small populated b towns against the power ful a and major teams of heavily populated areas to me gentlemen this is a farce of the largest magnitude i cannot possibly see what good it can do for hockey and tricounty hockey in general for a small populated area like acton 4300 to play brampton 35000 oakville 25000 or any other a or amajor team and be subjected to a onesided drubbing we fail to see the value of this in making good sportsmen 1 citizens and competitive athletes i personally would get little or no jubilation or satisfac tion in subjecting any team to humiliation by a large score especially if i outpopulalc my opponent by 25 to 30000 if we arc to develop good hockey talent from our com munity we must keep the teams on a competitive level if they step out of their depth they become disheartened morale becomes low and team spirit is soon nonexistent so gentlemen i request that acton novice not be scheduled any games home or away against a or amajor teams after my present schedule to november 5 1966 has elapsed i do hope this letter is accepted in the manner in which it is written in the interest of hockey in general b inscoe conch acton novice s that letter is precisely what most of the hockey coaches managers and executive from acton think about the present structure of the tricounty why dont they switch over to another league then theres nowhere else to go maam its a closed shop first workouts by the tanners under new coach fred kentner produced so many new faces trying out for places on the roam it was difficult to pick out players from last season there was a smattering from acton several from milton couple from georgetown and several more from the guelph district its going to be a real job for coach kentner to pick his crew ordinarily a coach has some idea of how a player responds iii the heat of a game in this instance hes unfamiliar with many of them like most intermediate leagues the oha is having trouble getting the one in this area organized a meeting monday in guelph drew representatives fyom four of the six teams involved but neither seaforth or milverton representatives showed up consequently nothing concrete was done and no schedule drawn up convener bob marshall was disappointed but hes called another meeting for thursday in acton to draw up a schedule theres a possibility milverton may not go through with their commitment in that event its likely another team will be enter ing the group to keep it at six teams according to oha past president pat patterson clinton wanted an entry in this league but they were advised to enter the woaa because of the distance most teams would have to travel beat bits art metanson veteran slugger with the milton red sox was chosen the sox most valuable player this season bruce hood miltons gift to the refereeing profession will likely be handling somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 nhl games this season barrle seniors have been trying to entice centre blakv lnglis into their camp this year blake was to have jnade up his mind between the seniors and intermediate with the tanners yesterday wednesday hes been practising with the tanner manager ed footitt discusses the new crop of players with coach fred kent ner at tuesdays workout in the community centre the pair have their work cot out for them picking an oha int b squad from the hope fuls whove shown up to date the club has held three prac tices a threehour opening session friday a twohour workout sunday and another one tuesday night several of last years team havent ap peared and they leave some large holes to plug tanners first practice sessions attract good looking prospects a grueling three hour work out friday night attracted sev eral new prospects for the 1966- 67 edition of acton tanners but by tuesday nights third prac tice sophomore coach fred kentner had pared down the crop of hopefuls to labout 20 hell probably have to cut down further before the season starts in november the tanners will play in an 0ha int b league this year with orangeville fergus hes peler seaforth and possibly milverton players from lasvcars team who appeared for practidevwere goalie jim player except for the fellows who keep in shape all year pound at a baseball meeting recently of all places a discussion ensued about the relative sizes of the george town and acton arenas jim james from georgetown claimed the ice surface there was much larger than actoris as the argument grew iittnlewsity several others chimed in george burt who lives in esouesing near georgetown ended it by saying acton built their rink a foot longer so they could say it was bigger four teams as evenly balanc ed as officials could make them will lift the industrial hockey league lid this sunday night in
