which in dicate an unusually successful program and concluded with several recommendations playgrounds prior to the beginning of the playground all the leaders at tended a training camp at bol- ton hen they learned and ac- compiished much to prepare them for the summer ahead the following is a list of the playground staff supervisor donna landsborough assist ant supervisors cavell marshall jojmarie marohment leaders linda ralston joanne lands- borough paul cooper teaders- ihtraining brenda aheme ed- ie hopkinsrkay chisholm thla year we operated two playgrounds one at aoton prospect park included a vari ety yf different things a few of these are arts and crafts nature quiet games active gam es sports music and special ev ents special events this year we attempted to holda special event every week each playground would hold a different one so that many would be tried a few of the weekly events were a tramps ball a tabloid sports day and a slcopout at one time during ithe sum mer we had a visit from con- stale campbell a local police man who gave the children a talk on safety also the firemen from town spent an afternoon on the playground talking to the children and showing them some of the equipment thcyusc at the closing of our play grounds we held a circus we spent the last week preparing different acts setting up booths to hold skill games a parade was held tor the children and they marched from the station to the arena the highlight of the eveningg was when a magic ian performed for the children and their parents swimming swimming lessons were held this year at the pool situated in aoton prospect park swimming instructors were as follows supervisor trudy morris assistant supervisors paul cooper and susan mitchell the children were put into groups according to their swim ming abilities these groups were known as salmon survfish minnows guppies jellyfish and bubblers they were tested each week and if successful they would move to a higher group there were two three week classes held during the summer roller skating roller skating was held for the first time this year in acton it was held cverv tuesday thur sday and saturday nights from 810 pm roller skates were rented from roy goodwin who oper ated the booth in the acton community centre attendance tor the majority of the time was well around 100 the following is a list of pat- rollers murray harrison an dy conway steven dubois john price and don price a roller skating club was started in the latter part of the season but was not too success ful an attempt should be made at the beginning of the roller skating season next summer special event twenty professional skaters from the mimicombo rink in mimico featuring ted jenkins put on a display here during the summer teen dances teen dances were held almost every saturday night after roller skating local bands were brought in fosuppty the music some of these were topix from georgetown blues incorporated from kitchener nitrons from acton shaynes from acton sabres from aoton bill warden and the tee jays from kitchen er seventh level from george- town minor lacrosse a house league was operated with john goy jr acting as coach manager referee and la crosse coordinator an effort was made to find coaches and referees to assist john how ever we fell short and he work ed hard and efficiently and de serves a lot of credit next year with the help of ross ballentine and john goy we hope to develop a county league with orangevillc erin fergus and elora participating girls softball an effort was made to estab lish some form of recreation for girls in acton with the help of frank spielvogel and charlie thompson a girls softball team was formed and entered in a lo cal league that included hills- burgh bel wood fergus elora west gara and havcsomcfun park the team had a success ful season in the league and en tered six or seven tournaments during the summer an average attendance of 175 200 watched the girls all summer their opening operating fin ances were derived from dona tions collections at games and special events one of these was an exhibition game with the world famous queen and her maids from california all the proceeds went towards the girls which provided a banquet at the end of the year wrestling after arrangements and agree ments were finalized with whip- per billy watson professional wrestling was held in the arena twice we had crowds of 1400 and 900 attending the only ar rangement that could be made was a flat rental of the arena to dave lmckigney watsons pro moter of 50 and 60 neverthe less it provided good recrea tion for the people who attend ed the show was enjoyable to all except that our own pjv system was inadequate special teen dances two special teen dances were held in the arena at the begin ning and at the end of the summer holidays both were reasonably successful with the exception of complaining neigh bors both attendance wise and financially an executive of teen agers atfas set up to help with theorganization of these danc es square dancing cooperation with the aoton pairs and squares is being main tained as much as possible we helped them with the advertis ing for special events and in the fall to help them organize a be ginners club the possibility of their receiving a program grant was researched but to no avail senior citizens in speaking with the golden age club i found them to be very well organized and need ing little or no guidance how ever i did tell them that any help needed could be received upon call t recommendations 1 that proper steps be taken to improve our proper acous tics in the arena any program that is successful is hampered by our lack of good acoustics winter and summer 2 that minor baseball be org anized in acton i have taken steps in this direction and its organization seemly highly pos sible for the summer of 1967 i recommend that we budget 200 towards its organization 3 that foreseeing the amalga mation in the new year the rec reation director be given con trol of scheduling the ball dia mond to all parties requiring it 4 that we hold wrestling four times next season 5 that wehold six special teen dances next season 6 that roller skating again be organized and held three nights a week and possibly sunday af ternoons as well 7 that more money be bud geted towards the employment of summer staff our current wages do not enhance the pos sibility of obtaining a fully qua lified staff i suggest the follow ing pay scale 9wccks 1 pro gram director 50 per week 6 weeks 1 playground director 30 per week 6 weeks 5 lea ders 25 per week 6 weeks 3 leadersintraining 10 per week 6 weeks 1 pool supervisor 2750 per week 6 weeks 1 pool assistant 20 per week to tal 1905 howard pearce recreation director mat i wtei lets play bridge by bill coats in last weeks column we were discussing leads particu larly the ambiguity of the lead of the king from both aceking and kingqueen this week i would hke to talk about that old standard lead of fourth best of your longest and strongest suit against a no trump contract this lead is a carryover from the days of whist and has much to recommend it by applying the rule of ii the partner and declarer con obtain a picture of thc outstanding high cards the rule of 11 states sub tract the value of the card led from 11 and this will tell you the number of cards in the oth er three hands that arc higher than the card led this is a very useful rule so useful in fact that it often helps declar er more than it helps the de fense along with this fourth best lead most bridge players will not lead fourth best unless they have an honor in the suit one of the current ideas that is catching on in bridge circles is as follows the lead of a low card in a suit against no trump indicates a desire to es tablish tricks in that suit if wish to lead a suit since you must lead and you dont wish to present declarer with trick or youre trying to hit our partners suit you lead a relatively high card i wish that i had been using such a system a few weeks ago 1 i was defending with wests hand against a three no trump contract here is the deal north sk 6 4 h k q id k 10 9 5 4 2 c 9 west east s 10 7 s a 9 5 3 2 h 7 6 5 3 2 hi 10 d a 6 3 d o 8 c a 8 2 c 10 6 4 3 south s q j 6 a 9 4 idj 7 c k q j 7 5 the bidding north east south west pass pass 1 c pass 1 d pass 1 nt pass 2 nt pass 3 nt all pass the bidding is most ambiti ous but was rewarded by ful filment of the contract since a fourth best lead would indi cate an honor i could not lead the three of hearts so i chose to lead the heart seven dec larer won with the ace and led the diamond jack this was run to easts queen east thought that i must have some clubs so a club was re turned now it was too late to do anything declarer regained the lead and cleared the dia mond suit in all the defense took three aces and the queen of diamonds using the new lead i would vote earl f waller to acton council december 6 1966 i i your
