heu tibwii u for ifw el in this issue a history of fhe om and a record of the new cen tennial library has been compiled purpose is to show the advance library facilities have made since the library was first opened n the town hall in the year 1b98 what were really trying to show is the need for the new library the foresight of those who proposed the idea and followed through on- the conviction this is what the town and district needs unfortunately for years acton has stumbled along with inadequate facili ties for the reading public crowded conditions in the old library kept some people away from the milieu of books there wasnt much room to browse be tween the shelves the press of people wasnt conducive to iingering over a manuscript ticklish subject when abe lincoln was a budding young lawyer in the backwoods of ii- the beautiful new centennial lib rary has eliminated these objections as well as providing a showpiece for the townspeople to brag about to less en lightened communities rf have never belonged to the library by all means do so now your tax dollar went into its construction and it will be your taxes which keep it going s why not share in t ben fits when the idea of a library was first proposed as a centennial project it was felt this was the facility most needed in town and districfwhich would bene fit the most people u now with the commodious new building completed and just about ready to open theres no reason to suppose the centennial committee was wrong e e e it wasnt long until abe was taking e inhisstnde andwinnii linols he tried without success to run for minor political office on two oc casions discouraged he turned for advice to an old politician the old campaigner looked at abe sized him up and down and said lin coln you look too darn young and in experienced to be running for public office youve got to do something about your looks so abe a big strapping rawboned backwoodsman with chiselled features and a knack for telling yarns decided hed try and do something about them first thing he did was grow a beard eventually became president of the united states naturally much of the credit went to the beard this story is told for the benefit of those males who falling in with the centennial theme have chosen to grow some chin shrubbery despite misgiv ings from the other half of the marriage contract perhaps ladies youve got a bud ding corporation president or prime minister in your midst a beard may bring these qualities out in the open besides he may win a prize in the ys mens competition and will it really tickle that much church in foment one of the most heartening aspects of the present unrest in society is the penetrating examination being made of the christian church hardly a week goes by that the sub- iectil not freely discussed in the press on radio or television l it is as fashionable these days to talk about religion as it is to talk about politics this of course is healthy far bet ter than the indifference of the past it shows concern for values which many people at one time thought irrelevant but it must be remembered there is little about it that is new except as it relates to contemporary situations what is happening now has happened many times before in fact many of the situ ations today were also current when christ walked in the province of galilee the church has always survived such ferment and its- unlikely to fold up and die now the institutionalized church is in need of reform most people will agree changes made are going to present new challenges and opportunities to individuals concerned a montreal theologian says that if the church is to be updated and to be more relevant and useful it must de velop a new focus to prepare the laity for service in the world he also says that if the gospel is to be taken into the world the church must be aware of the world todays goal is new relationships between people in the world based on honesty humjjjy and acceptances the church has been more concerned in the past with itself its size and organiza tion than it has been in building a bet ter world the anglican archbishop of canter bury expressed it very well a few years ago he said a church which lives to itself will die by itself f hctej on the subect of timesaving edi tor ed trefiak of building supply deal er suggests removing distractions from offices he quotes one man who had a sailfish stuffed mounted and hung in his office everyone who called spent 20 minutes admiring the fish asking how it was caught and relating their own fishing exploits the executive had it moved to his basement and saved an estimated six hours a week the report doesnt state what he did with the six hours business press news view from the breezes jfrtt fi editorial page sugar and spice by bill smiley i dont know whether its the weath er but certain species proliferate in this country with the rapidity of rab bits one is the chairman of commit tees theres one for every snowbank in the nation another is the guest speaker theres one at the bottom of every bar rel and another is the canvasser in some mailer communities there are more canvassers than noncanvassers a canvasser is a weakwilled person who can be talked into asking other people- for money for a good cause or even more popularly a worthy cause the number of worthy causes in this country is only exceeded by the number of backboneless birds of both sexes who allow themselves to be put on the list of canvassers and i know whereof i speak op my day i have canvassed for the blind the retarded the resort owners the- red cross the salvation army and eleven- teen other worthy causes about the only thing i havent done is sell cookies for the girl guides and ive hated every minute of it the trouble is that the average canadian citizen heartily detests the handing over of cash for an intangible at heart hes a generous soul he knows the red cross does good work that something should be done for the blind and that we need a school for retarded children but he cant eat them smoke them drink them or even attach them to his car therefore the fellow who will fling down a ten in the liquor store as though he grew the lettuce will dourly head shaking peel ff a couple of thin -one- spots for the sally ann the housewife who buys her weeds by the carton will spend 20 minutes looking for two quarters for the cancer societv and i know just how thev feel im the same some dav somebody is going to rap at mv door for a bad cause- a free crock a dav for alcoholics a clinic for potential pool plavers a home for unwed fathers and im going to hand over 20 cash without quivering an evelid this preamble as vou have probablv gathered is because i got siickered once again into canvassing for a good cause fe centennial picture fatter this time its a community swim ming pool a yearround pool already theres a good sized lake within the town limits we live on the shore of the biggest freshwater bay in the world six miles away is one of the great lakes with miles of safe sand beaches but the kids have to be able to swim in the winter next summer 111 probably be can vassing for a summer ski hill with arti ficial snow for the kids maybe its the sheer audacity of this campaign that grabbed me this is no picking up 800 for the blind or 500 for the crippled children they want over a quarter of a rniiion the result ant campaign is a combination of the nights of the long knives and the st barthojemews day massacre what it amounts to is 30 for every man woman and child in town non- realistic you say nonsense all ittakes is enough canvassers and they will cow the citizenry into coughing up my first night out was a typical six calls to make first place nobody home second place no such address third place a response a chap on shift work tottering down is his pyjamas and snarl ed the party i was seeking lived next door called on him wouldnt give vou a plugged nickel he said but mv wife said shed give two bucks at the fifth place i rang and rang no answer i looked in the window the householder was lying on the chester field there was arr empty glass beside him i threw snow at the window no re sponse i kicked the door four times i left but i struck it rich at the last place caught both husband and wife at home a very modest home gave my sales pitch with fervor enthusiasm and sincer ity they admitted they had five kids agreed they would use the pool and looking a bit troubled but game pledg ed 50 a year for three years returned triumphant to make my report oh ves good old jimmy chortled an oldtimer on canvassing he pledges for everything from church to paying his taxes has been on welfare for two vears cant hold a job more than a week mm a jmoup
