assembly that the government is considering legislation to ban the dis tribution of such stamps by food stores in ontario members that i have polled in the house seem evenly divided on this sub ject the main argument against these stamps is that they are a promotional gimmick which adds to the cost of food and groceries that if a consumer does not use them he or she is paying extra for something unnecessarily and fur- ther it encourages the housewife to con centrate on a camera or canopener in stead of price and quality other argu ments are that such promotion does not increase the iuiisuiiiprionofanypattic- ular brand or prbduct doesnt help the farmer and primary producer and fin ally that many such gimmicks are op erated illegally those who are opposed to legisla tion banning trading stamps or are in different about it feel that a consumer should have the right to make a choice that not all stores give stamps and more important food at the stores that dont handle them is not any cheaper than food at the stores that do the people that are against a ban claim probably quite correctly that if trading stamps ar aimd 1 ire banned the saving will hot be paisfed on to the consumer in lower food prjees ah food chains bud get a certain amount of money for ad vertising and promotion and if not by handing out trading stamps then in some other media or method allowable under the law the distribution and sale of food products is a very competitive business and each grocery chain does as much as possible to successfully compete last fall at a provincialfysponsored agricultural conference at vineland on tario a group known as the canadian association of consumers supported by such other varied groups as the retail merchants association the ontario fed eration of labor the federated womens institutes of ontario and the ontario food council all urged a ban on trading stampsin thitprovince this is probably why the attorney general is considering such legislation there was a very interesting editor ial in last fridays hamilton spectator on this subject the spectator apparent ly as a result of its quick survey is against proposed legislation to ban the stamps the bill is expected to come before the legislature very soon at present even the kerr household is divided on this issue please let me know what you think press heavy tape just inside the lower edge
