marketing diseases by geoff taylor monday evening march 13 marked the occasion of the halton egg producers associa tion annual meeting and ban quet ni hornby united church cal loomitt representing the ontario egg and fowl produc ers marketing board report ed to the group on the provin cial associations recent and upcoming activities including a very important annual meet ing to be held on wednesday march 29 at 1000 am at the constellation hotel near mai- ton airport this meeting will deal with a proposed market ing plan for egg producers guest speaker drrwiiham gregg a halton county farm er and research specialist with connaught laboratories toronto mentioned some of the- more serious poultry dls- learn to do by doing what is 4h the national 4h emblem is a fourleaf clover with a let ter h on each leaf the base of the emblem is a white scroll on which appears the word canada the 4h colors are green and white the name 4h is derived from the first letter of the four words head heart hands club my community and my country 44i clubs in ontario are or ganized and designed specific ally for farm young people the objectives of the 4h program are to help the 4h member 1 acquire knowledge and skills in modern agriculture 2 adopt a scientific attitude toward agriculture 3 develop qualities of leader ship 4 develop a sense of responsi bility 5 realize the need for contin uing education 6 acquire the habits and atti tudes necessary for a satisfy- ing home and community life 4h agricultural club work in ontario 4h agricultural clubs in on tario are organized by the ex tension branch of the ontario department of agriculture and food under the direction of the agricultural representa tives office in each county or district the chief objective of 4h agricultural club training is invaluable to tomorrows citizens tne program is thci develop ment of ihe 4h club member through training in agriculture and citizenship note this applies only to 4h agricultural clubs 4oh homemaking clubs for girls 12 to 26 years of age are also org i n on tario under the direction of the home economics branch of the ontario de partment of agriculture and food what makes up a 4h club a ten or more young people who are at least 12 years of age or older by january 1 and have not reached their 21st birthday by december 31 of the club year b local 4h club leaders who work closely with the young people helping to pro vide instruction and guidance with the 4h program these men and women provide their services on a voluntary basis and much of the credit for the success of 4h is owing to their work c a sponsoring organization which may be any group such as agricultural societies service clubs junior farmers etc who art interested in the development of the youth of their community the local sponsor contributes at least one third of the financial sup port of the club and in many cases takes an active part in the club promotion what kinds or 4h clubs are there in ontario 4h clubs are are recognized as some of the most popular 4h agri cultural club projects which will be offered to halton 4hers in 1967 dairy cair beef calf sheep corn forage grain conserva tion electric and strawberry the last three along with a senior herd management pro ject for calf clubs are senior 4h clubs which have been de veloped for members between the ages of 16 and 20 years what do 4h members do the type of activity and work which the 4h member docs wih depend on the pro ject selected in all cases how ever the member i undertakes a specific pro ject this project is completed by the individual member on his or her home farm here the member gains the practical experience of actually doing the work required to complete the project members learn to keep accurate records on their project submit reports and observe the results of their ap plied knowledge senior 4thcalf club memb ers also have the opportunity of adding to their experience by completing a beef or dairy herd management project along with their regular calf project 2 attend regular education al meetings these meetings are held once a month throughout the club year which in most cases is for a five or six month period beginning in the spring and ending in the fall practical demonstrations are included in the program to give members an opportunity to develop their skills meet ings arc conducted according to parliamentary procedure 3 exhibit or participate at achievement day each 4h club concludes its year with an achievement day program us ually held in conjunction with the local fall fairs each member is required to partici pate in this program in order to complete his or her project 4 participate in other activi ties a wide variety of activit- ics at the county regional and say happy
