during the coming year a hal- ton farm accident survey will again be conducted by the hal ton county womens institute in the original accident sur vey in 1959 there were a total of 111 accidents in the county resulting in six fatalities acci dent victims lost 1500 hours of work with medical bills of s15000 and property damage of 1191000 haa our accident rate im proved during the years this survey is to indicate any chang es and to provide useful infor mation to assist in the preven tion of accidents workmens compensation is now compul sory for fattn employees there is an indication that farmers busy during centennial the april meeting of the hal ton county junior farmers county board was held in the agricultural office- in milton on april 5 one of the main items on the agenda for new business was membership for the coming year the county president ruth mason issued a challenge to all three clubs in the county to see which one could increase their membership by the larg est margin anyone wishing to join a local junior fanner club should contact any mem ber or the agricultural office in milton before april 25 to se cure an ontario membership the annual church service will be held on april 30 in mil ton at which time the indue- another judging prize won by john mcnabb georgetown john y monabb owner of gallumlea guernsey farm rr 2 georgetown came within one point of winning the 13th all american judging competition sponsored by the american guernsey cattle club and judg ed by looking at pictures repro duced in the american guern sey journal mr mcnabb scor ed 154 points attended the clubs first outdoor meeting of the season the subjects dis cussed included the planting of strawberries how to take the soil samples and applying the correct types and amounts of fertilizer demonstrations were given on each of the topics cov ered charles warner fruit and vegetable extension specialist set july 12 for the halton 441 strawberry club members ach- levement day at which time each second year member will display a twoquart box of each strawberry plant variety which he or she planted last year lion of new members will take place the offering will go to the world etc the local branch of the unit ed cooperatives of ontario has offered to help sponsor a centennial project undertaken by the halton junior farmers a centennial yearbook has been suggested and a commit tee has been set up to look into ihe matter further as a provincial project the ontario junior farmers have undertaken a drive to collect used books for children nine to 14 years of age anyone who hn books of this nature which are no longer of any use to them can contact any member or the agricultural office in milton as soon as possible the junior farmers of ontario would be most grateful for these vjerna thompson daughter of mr and mrs gordon thompson of rr 2 milton has been chosen to represent ontario at the 37th national 4h conference in washington dc she will be one of 10 pro vincial representatives chosen for their outstanding personal qualifies and high standards of acl ievement in 4h work they will present a special program about canada during the conference in addition to participating in a full agenda of meetings tours and cere monies verna will be leaving for ot tawa april 20 and arrive in the states the following day while in ottawa the dele gates will tour the city and re ceive canadian citizenship cer tificates from prime minister pearson with lunch provided by the canadian department of agriculture the conference in usa will last six days and miss thomp son will return april 28 verqa has completed 24 4h agricultural club projects and has held all executive positions in the various clubs that she has been a member of she has won numerous judging troph ies and awards for her achieve ments in 4h cluhj work and sports activities in 1965 af ter winning first prize in the hamilton science fair with her entry on mastitis verna travel led to winnipeg where she competed in the allcanada science fair this year she en tered the hamilton science fair again and placed first in the medicine and hygiene sec tions and fourth overall out of 100 competitors
