famf amy farms have been hand ed down by ancestors but there u one farm 111 remem ber most of all this farm is situated west of rockwood on number 7 highway built in 1842 it still stands as if new it was built by the late charles bernard after being handed down by his sons it now belongs to miss edith bernard of rockwood the house itself being 90 years old still gives off a cheerful welcome upon enter ing it as it would have done years ago m if theae buildings could talk what exciting stories we would heart but as it is the buildings can talk therefore it is up to us to tell the mys teries which lie behind the worn walls as you read this i hope it will reveal the mys teries you have wished to learn i also hope it will show you what the name century farm means to the people involved the house stood sheltered by the leaves of the beautiful maples which rustled in the wind inside the oil lamps cast their shadowy glow a- cross the floor the woman washed their dishes in the big iron sink which stood straight and strong- later they would en- joy the warmth of the fire place the butter churn now stood id the corner after a wary day of work its work seaaad as the family ai med large amounts of the milk was brought bvdjtfjy and today milk was ike wooden table the milkman no not on this farm or as a matter of fact on anv farm at that time these people were independent as you now see these people were vcrv much different than us mrs bernard would make her own soap and bread as well as prepare her fruit and vegetables for the winter if winter was near she would likelv be knitting socks and mittens todav most mothers go out and buy these necessi ties without ever thinking of making them themselves when the girls grew up thev were expected to take over certain tasks which be came verv common to them how manv of us would think of makingi candles not many im sure when thev were fi nished this they would admire them and like many of us would boast a little another task would be to spin the wool which the men had carefully taken off the sheep how proud the girls were when thev were finished spinning it now washing day came all the girls pitched in by taking the wash board and tub from the corner and filling it with water then mrs bernard pushed the clothes up and down until her hands became red with pain soon the clothes were hung outside to let the wind play tag among them on a sunday afternoon all was still the bernards had gone to church with their horse and buggy edith her sister and mother were knit ting for the red cross like they had done for years noth ing strenuous was done no this family kept sunday holy i think well all agree the ber nards were a hard working family on a cold frosty morning the light could be seen burn ing in bernards barn never once did they sleep in or ne glect the chores before going to school the children got up and hurried to the barn placing them selves on a stool they hung a lantern above them soon the pari was full of milk after they finished eating they did the dishes and walked to ss no 1 school since they own ed geese chickens and ducks pn one farm gathering eggs was a big chore usually the children did it before leaving for school harvesting was the main event in the year horses were hooked up to the old wagon and were led through the back lanes to the field which they were harvesting the men later stored it in the barn or sold it it was also made into food for the fowl if christmas was coming a fowl just had to be selected often cattle were killed and made read for a christmas feast pigs uere treated in the same way even though the gardens arent associated with major farming it doesnt mean to say that thev didnt have one because thev did berries were grown of course berries were not the only thing they grew for potatoes corn peas beans etc could be seen growing in the well kept garden these various items were also haavested in the fall these people had a rugged life as we can very well ima gine as they used horses we use tractors they made their clothes and we buy ours which century would we ra ther live in even though this is in story form all these events did take place in ber nards century farm now as we come to the end of the secrets which lie behind those warm walls i hope you can what the name century arm means to the people involved the executive committee of acton pairs and squares met at the home of harold and audrey denny thursday eve ning heading the agenda were plans for next falls dancing activities they hope to have a class of beginner basics dur
