wednesday april 26 1967 storey farm purchased by robert dunbar 1830 received has been told to me by mr john douglas mcnabb who in tum was told by ms father it this is another in the ser ies of tine top 12 centennial essays by students tat grad es seven end eight ot rock- wood numd school by bob storey the section of the country on which our farm is located was originally in possession of the mississauga indians on october 18 1818 an ag reement was made between honorable william claie dep uty superintendent general of the indians affairs and five chiefs of the mlssissaug- as by which a tract of 648000 acres was obtained this in cluded eramosa erin gara- fraxa and luther our farm consists of one hundred acresot this land now deeded as lot five con cession six eramosa town ship the first settlers began ar riving in the 1820s the origin al deed for the farm was granted to a mr cooper very little is known of this man robert dunbar a redhead ed irishman purchased the farm about 1830 he was the father of a very large family there being some nine boys and several girls these people were quite the dudes they had a flair for fancy horses harness and rigs as a result of these likings the dunbars were always in a great deal of debt however one of his busi ness deals proved quite sound he purchased an adjoining twentyfive acres for one hun dred dollars from this tract he obtained sufficient timbers and lumber to build a barn he also obtained a similar amount which was sold to build another barn in erin the first house was a large rambling building of frame construction it is even said to have contained a ballroom in 1872 the farm was sold to mr john mcnabb he made a great number of improve ments he squared the fields by moving the fences which made the land easier to work in 1892 the old frame house was completely torn down and the present cut stone house was built the stone be- laid by messrs joe and fohnathon oakes the stone ame from a quarry on lot 31 n the sixth concession of nas- agaweya a summer kitchen and woodshed were added in 1908 joe and harry oakes did this stone work using ordin ary field stone taken off the grounds on the farm the original bam was small and buit by the dunbars in 1883 a hew horse stable was added by mr mcnabb then in 1909 the original bam was widened and the roof raised to match up in height and width with the new horse stable a fifty foot well was dug beside the bam in 1883 a wooden tower windmill was erected at the same time through the years the wea ther rotted the pine boards and it had to be replaced by a steel tower which cost one hundred and ten dollars a wooden silo was added in 1914 mr mcnabb sold the farm to his son john douglas who farmed it from 1919 to 1951 although john douglas did general fanning he special ized in pure bred shorthorn cattle during his time of own ership a depression occurred with prices for his produce rising and falling in may 1951 the farm ag ain changed ownership mr mcnabb sold one hundred acr es to my father r maxwell storey in 19s2 electricity was in stalled in all the buildings and indoor plumbing in the house in 1953 there was a coun trywide scarcity of water the well at the house which had been dug to twenty five feet and shored with stone did not supply enough water for the stock and the house thus it was found neces sary to drill fifty five feet through the stone to find suf ficient water to keep up with the demand an electric pump was installed in 136 the horse stable was torn out and replaced by an allsteel stable for the dai ry cows at this time too the last work horses were sold this was the beginning of changing from the general style fanning to the present dairy fanning in i960 an aluminum pole barn was erected in place of the old sheep shed by 1962 the old wooden silo was be yond repair so a cement silo measuring fourteen feet by fortyfive feet was built there have been many chan ges in the house too as tune passes for instance in light ing it was the candle first then the oil lamps and now the presentday electricity in heating it was wood then coal and now the modern oil furnace progress takes place in farming as well as in industry and what is new today may be outdated in a few weeks no doubt there are many in teresting and humorous hap penings i know nothing about to my knowledge no written records have
