score toronto appeared to have the victory edge oa the candiens throughout the game as the habs tried desperately to pur that puck past sawchuck who made the difference in the game with his extra ordinary netminding abilities the leafs clinched things up when armstrong scored the insurance goal late in the third ellis opened the scoring nearly in the second period and stemkowski came back in the third for their second marker of the game this will be the 11th stanley cup win for the maple leafs who had to pick themselves up off the floor near the middle of the season put a little life into some of their older players and cop the most valued trophy in hockey the stanley cup the stanley cup originates from as far back as 1890 when lord jcelcoursie later lord craven visited canada witnessed a few hockey games and decided he would like to become an icea t boys tutored him and finally he was made a member of the rebels hockey club in the ontario amateur hockey association when lord kelcoursie- learned that the dashing lads battled for nothing other than honor and glory he communicated with his comrade lord stanley and suggest ed that he donate a prize the result was 10 pounds sterling 50 from lord stanley and this was used to purchase the cup now greatly enlarged and still the most prized treasure in hockey a note this week to all adults comes from the acton minor baseball association which reminds all adults of a general meeting next monday night at the community centre plan to attend at 8 pm as all registrations will be studied as well as plans for baseball this summer everyone interested including potential coaches and managers are especially re minded to attend this worthwhile organization is attempting to keep the youngsters off the streets and onto success of minor league ball a lot of people are giving up a lot of time and work to make this sport possible now lets get out and give them our support the new ball diamond which is now in progress of being built in the glenlea park area was planned with the idea in mind that minor ball will become a big thing here in acton and along with the facilities offered at prospect park there is an adequate number of baseball diamonds for a fair size sche dule to begin on the seaforth beavers copped the o ha int b champion ship title in seaforth on friday night with a 54 win over ox bridge the seaforth jeam has captured the honors for the last three years winning a fete which has never before been exe cuted in that league at an open meeting held sunday afternoon at the com munity centre trophies and executive positions were awarded to players in the industrial hockey association brian mccristall received the championship trophy on behalf p the oriole team who copped the title in the controversial piajwff finale john leatherland took borne the mast valuable player trophy which was well earned for johns jgviltehding abilities and sportsmanlike attitude stu macdonald received the trophy for the top scoring player in the league with a total of over 45 points executive responsibilities for the 6768 season were hand ed over to john mcnabb president harry phillips vicepresi dent jim mcdonald secretary and gary ritchie treasurer the executive position in a league such as this requires a warranted amount of work which i am sure last seasons team whll substantiate and this years group i know will give their best efforts to do as good a job the acton softball association this year appears to be plagued by a lack of interest on participants behalf last sun days meeting netted very scarce results plaver and sponsor- wise this years executive is very disappointed in that lack of interest and would like to see more of you plavers signing up lets not wait until the last minute to come running up to the executive and asking to play the schedule for this season has already been drawn up and if the plavers arent going to come out then there just isnt going to be a softball league whats the sense of having a recreation committee in the town which is solely based on supplving acton with recrea tion of the people who can plav and have plavcd dont want to make any effort
