serving four years in south africa dur ing the boer war from 1898- 1902 he emigrated o canada in 1904 shortly after his service and married alice stigant in toronto on july 17 1905 war broke out in 1914 1 he was the first married man in acton to enlist he served overseas where he was wounded and gassed at the first battle of ypres a sergeant he was promoted to company ser geant major of the 5th batal- uon before he was invalided home in 1915 back in canada he recruited the wellknown 164th batalfion and then was sent to take charge of the guard detail on the queenston st bridge over the wetland canal in st cath arines from there he was sent to decew falls to take charge of the camp there until hostilities ceased amgi be volunteered for service in world war ii health prevented him
