traffic law can help keep thf accident rale down policemen have the job of enforcing the traffic law but they cant be every where at once if all driven would vol untarily police themselves end abide by the rules of the road we would see a harp reduction in the total number of accidents the 1966 victoria day weekend claimed 54 traffic accident victims in ontario thereirbe a lot of other people on osnf ee the road this weekend too with a variety of destinations in mind theyll be driving cars loaded with families and camping gear many will be pull- ing boats or other trailers youll need to be a skillful and careful driver to get through holiday traffic safely canadians exhausted by the long winter seem to head for the carefree vacation spots in increasing numbers on the first holiday weekend unforrun ately the carefree thoughts sometimes leads to carefree driving and this is reflected in higher accident tolls were all apt to get careless at times especially on roads we are fam iliar with drive carefully this weekend the life you save may be your own mrtt rtss editorial page ccmputera challenge humans are we within 40 or 50 years of producing computers that will rank with intelligent achieved within the past 25 years and the fact that the human effort being put into this field is increasing by leaps and bounds already he notes computers have done many things if done by a person would have been regarded as creative and original though they have com posed no great symphonies they neve turned out what he calls tolerable melodies one computer recently produced an elegant new proof of an elementary theorem in euclidean geometry an other has been programmed to become a world master at checkers learning from its own mistakes and improving its game playing against experts all of which is very impressive as are the increasingly sophisticated tasks which they are assuming within indus try we can reasonably expect them to perform even more remarkably in the years ahead as they take over more and more of the routine deadening jobs freeing human beings for better things but when it comes to creativity and originality we suspect that plain old homo sapiens will still have the edge even 40 or 50 years hence the smartest computer of the day wilt still be merely the mechanical al beit complex product of human ingen uity a soulless apparatus lacking that divine spark which alone can ignite true genius the melodies may have improved along with the geometric sums yet mozart and euclid no less than shakes peare and keats we suspect remain untoppled checker players on the patrol jamboree parade sponsored by the canadian automobile association and constituent motor clubs severe from acton and district will participate sponsored by the hamilton automobile club since they were established in the early 1930 in canada the death rate involving school age children plunged downward dropping nearly onehalf in no other area of traffic safety has this performance been equalled never since its inception has a child under the care of patrols been fatally injured apart front their value in traffic safety there are many other benefits which accrue to those who participate in the school safety patrols in his wel coming letter to the participants in the 1966 jamboree his excellency georges vanier governor general of canada pointed this out by saying your dedi cation to this work develops apprecia tion of responsibility and your aware ness of the needs of good citizenship you learn the importance of respect for and cooperation with law enforcement agencies later in life your service with safety patrols will help you become better drivers deepening your respect for the rights of others and will develop qualities and attitudes within you which will serve for a lifetime good spring tonic it cleanses you physically and spiritually and leaves you exhausted i had mine last saturday the im portant thing in going after speckled trout of course is the careful planning theres no use to it at all if you just throw your fishing wear in the car and go out to some stream where ajl the amateurs angle and toss in a line you are liable to come home with a creel fall of tish if you go at it in this haphazard way no first of all you select a fishing companion this to a real angler is just a bit less important than choosing a mate for life you want a dependable chap the type who is going to have fresh worms for both of you a good sup ply of hooks maps with the surefire holes marked in red and an infallible sense of direction in the bush thats exactly what i lined up this year mind you those keen types take a bit 01 managing theyre great in the bush but they need an organizational mind to channel their energies i had to get quite firm with him when he be gan muttering about 4 am and hitting the strearrj at dawn dawn indeed i told him that is pure superstition only the very young immature angler goes floundering off in the dark fishes like a fool until noon then is whacked for the day just about then the wily mature angler fortified with a good breakfast arrives and slaughters the trout which are complete ly unprepared for the second wave the experts well we got away about 1030 after a couple of false starts he forgot his lunch and we had to go around to his place and when we got out to the coun- tv line i realized that because of his stupidity id been upset and had for gotten mv waders but he had a beautiful spot picked out you park the car just off the road and walk up this hvdro line to the stream the stream was just in there past the fourth hvdo tower he thought it was just past the 14th and theyre 100 vards apart not another angler in sight i gloat ed we cached the lunch and began work ing up the stream i like that word we anglers use working you couldnt hire a man to do it for iso an hour slash in the face from an alder hole in the boot from a snag slide from a log and ohohohoh a ou hit that spring fed water lose a boot in the mud scratch hands to a blcodv mess on jagged branches but its an worth it if the trout are biting and bov were thev biting they were biting each other on the neck nib bling each others ears and snapping each other in half as far as i know but thev werent biting worms after an hour of torture that would have made the gestapo green with envy we arrived at the big pool above the beaver dam the surefire hole we fished hard a big mallard hen popped into the pond secure in the knowledge that it wasnt duck season looked us over cackled with laughter and took off feet looked at each of us and expressed his feeling by turning his rump in the air and submerging we fished desperately suddenly there was a huge splosh then a ker plunk kerplunk and a big buck deer splashed through the shallows and away sneering over his shoulder that did it we left but there was no point said my mate in talcing the long torturous trail back down the stream through that heavy slash so with his infallible sense of direction we swung around in a circle by the high ground the high ground turned out to be cedar based in mud both so thick you had to crawl most of the time the circle turnedout to be the two long sides of an isosceles triangle two hours later we hit fhehydro road right on the nose ex cept that the nose had moved about a mile due east my first trout trip of the season and believe me t dont care if mrs richard burton wants to go along next time its my last there have to be easier ways to get a coronary 4stcrial note if you buy all the special postage stamps to be issued
