secretary of the christian labor association of canada at a meeting of the presbytery of brampton of the presbyterian church in cana da on may 16 he was voicing his organiza tions opposition to the churchs general assembly ap proving the principal of union security in collective bargain ing whereby payment of union due is compulsory for all em ployees covered bv the collec tive agreement irrespective of union membership in reply rev arthur gow- land secretary of the presby terian board of evangelism and social action insisted that the churchs position did not require that anyone be forced to join a labor union but that the church agreed with the rand formula that no man be forced to join but if a man benefit tram a contract let him bear the cost he maintained presbytery was readers write on conservation dear editor it can be said that the act of progress is making money or is supported by the raising of funds no business can progress un less it makes money no or ganization can progress unless it raises funds to susitain it no selfsupporting church can pro gress unless its members as true stewards give voluntarily to support it we say that we must pro gress in order that humanity shall benefit it seems to this scribe that such a statement must be qualified and we therefore must ask the ques tion benefits whom a certain town decides to expand by building more homes who benefits firstly rts the persons who have sold the property then the builder and the men who install the services and quite often the 03 c s vffn 3 hfe snsnumu james earl of elgin and father in 1848 it confers the rank of ensign on robert ireland and is signed by the earl of elgin and kincardine the governor general of british north america and lt- col d macdonell adjutant for the militia peoplj who move into them de pending on the quality of their neighbors now what about the rest of humanity in that town the people who move in for the most part work elsewhere they send their kids to school on weekdays and to sunday school on sundays but some of the parents never go near the church does the church bene fit not by a good sight does the school benefit no the school board has new head aches that of building expan sion andtheheed for more teachers the church has to find more volunteer teachers in order to train the nonsup porters kids in the true values of life industry in the town continues to support the town as before therefore the only wav that expansion apd the neeh for new facilities can be paid for is by increasing the taxes to the home owner the men who have sold the land dont care for they have moved out of town the builder does nt care he lives in another town now let us suppose that much of this land which has been sold was described as useless it was only swamp and a poor grade of forest tangle thus there was no bene fit in keeping it as no one could make monev from it and therefore it would be far bet ter to turn it into something useful this they sav is pro- gress and a town mustnt stand still the council of that town should have known that swamps and wooded swamps are of great value to an area and that all swamps should be protected why because one gallon of swamp moss sphag num moss is said to hold back eight gallons of water and water is so essential to hold our water table to keep our streams from dwindling and wells from going dry swamps support many forms of wildlife ontarios largest swamp lu ther swamp was partially drained to provide what poli ticians boasted would be the finest farm lands in the pro vince who benefitted no one rivers whose sources drained the swamp flooded excessively each spring and were greatly reduced in flow in the dry months drained land was car boniferous and useless the swamp had to be increased in the quickest way known to its original penmiters king township in york county has reduced its for ests and swamps to a point where thev have been in scr- jousdiicullv- with dry wells and streams a town in ontario lost its water supply by lumberjng off t woods above it we in lakevicw have looked out at the back of our gardens and watched thousands of trees crash to the ground trees
