the abort free pnm wednesday may 314ot x bat call has been issued for those interested in lacrosse another registration will be held in the community centre on saturday morning at 930 for kids 813 if the registration nets as many players as it did at last weeks registration the whole idea would be called off and a lot of you kids are going to miss out on an interesting sports and a great deal of fun tha way acoree have been coming n from the industrial softball league it looks as though the teams have divided themselves up into a one sided affair herbs delivery seems to dominate the field player wise although to this date herbs delivery and station hotel teams are tied with two games apiece after heroics boys downed the dominion rotelers with a decisive 194 score last night ah competition appears thus far to be between these two teams although the dominion hotel and the iga teams may come up with some surprises later in the season day weekend in the us this year and every year from 1911 to the present day marks the running of the indianapolis 500 automobile race this years race which had to be stopped after the 18 lap due to rain and continues today will alter the complete history of the race pameili jones forerunner in yesterdays 18 lapper led the pack during yesterdays halting of the race by a considerable margin in his turbine powered car a canadian built machine engineered by an aircraft firm and entered as a first for this type of race mario andretti a well known professional driver in the racing field who was forced out of the race during the 11th lap due to a burnedout clutch says that the piston driven engine will never compete with capabilities of the turbine driven machine prize money in a race such as the indy 500 amounts to approximately 200000 howard pearce appreciation night which is this coming friday night promises to be an enjoyable sports event charlie thomson has a well planned evening of baseball ranging from novice hardball to an exhibition of the girls softball team as well as a presentation and showing of appreci ation of the services howard pearce former recreation director for acton had rendered the world of outdoors art with h a w e s top scores at maple rock shooting range this weekwere recorded by john shadbolt 25 22 and 21 dave johnston 24 art hawes 23 wayne leadston 2221 17 and ed hohenadel 21 a trophy shoot will take place at maple rock this sun day june 4 the event is a 50 bird shootoff for the wayne leadston trophy this shoot is for the regular team competi tors only and all members are asked to attend and take part sunday june 18 is the date set for the first hair of the annual competition with the halton sportsmens associa tion of milton this half takes place atthe milton club and the second half wit take place at maple rock this is a team event with fiveman teams rep resenting each club at last weeks county coun cil meeting councillors were again faced with the question of whether or not halton should have an open deer sea son this year two other suggestions were also brought forward chem ical control of deer population the pill or selective killing from our experiences with deer it would appear the deer are far too smart for any man to select- certain deer and kill only those if the professional hunter is what they mean by selective killing it is certain the killing will not be selective and indeed it would take a very good hunter to make any ap preciable dent in the deer herds if he intends hunting them by himself dtfkg the deer to admin ister the pim should also prove interesting last year the reason given for not having a season was there was too much damage by hunters a check of the previ ous deer season indicated no reports were turned in to the department of lands and for ests of damage any farm ani mal shot by aunt eis is paid for by the department if it is re ported to them further investigation revealed that the committee of county council that deals with the deer season had indeed had a com plaint it seems a certain farm er who prides himself in his purebred sheep which are ap parently kept for show pur poses was the lone cocnplainer heres a scmbre satistical warning in accidents that oc cur at highway speeds the likelihood of death increases about 10 per cent for each one- u increase over 53 mph thus the chances of being kill ed is twice as great in a 65 mph crash as it is at s5 sash somehow a gate was left open by persons unknown and the wrong sheep got -together- and followed their natural in stincts which produced un wanted crossbred lambs while we sympathize with the fanner in his loss as far as we can determine no evidence was given to prove that hunters wre responsible however the blame wavtplaced on the hunt ers by the fanner and the re sulting uproar to committee members caused the refusal given to the idea of a deer sea son the government of this coun ty is indeed in sad shape when one unproven case of damage by hunters can cause thous ands of hunters to loose the right to an open deer season to appease one farmer the mem bers of council should base their opinions on the desires of the people whom they are sup posed to represent and not be swayed by one lone complain- er other information received indicates the county has no le gal right to control any wildlife seasons this is a custom that has evolved over the years al though there is no legal basis for it we are of the opinion it is time the department of lands and forests took over the control of wildlife which is rightfully heirs and give the people of southern ontario some sensible wildlife control based on what is needed to keep the wildlife population at a desirable level athletic awards night at school honors outstanding athletes teams
