coats on wednesday june 14 85 stu dents from acton and district embarked on a week of high adventure we were going to expo at 7 am we waved goodbye to sleepyeyed parents and boarded the train at the cnr station with our heavy suitca ses and high hopes arriving at toronto union station we switched to the rapido a direct express to montreal the five hours of this journey were passed by reading card playing and eating when it was discovered there was a coach full of boy scouts be tween us and the dining car several cars developed frequ ent hunger pangs at montreal buses were waiting to take us to the cha lets s they were described in the glowing advertisements the dictionary defines a chalet as a country residence like a swiss mountain cottage in our safari village it meant simply dormitory the on ly resemblance to a swiss cot tage being the location at the foot of a beautiful mountain st hilaire our meals were prepared in a large hall along with groups from other schools the teach ers supervised and everyone willingly lent a hand boys who admitted theyd never picked up a tea towel at home helped with cooking washing and sweeping every morning we were aw akened at precisely 730 by a monotonous voice saying ex actly the same thing good morning 730 time to get up this greeting was followed by some dire threats and cusses from the sweet young things in the dorm now on to expo expo captures and challeng es your imagination the first thing that impressed us is the atmosphere itself everyone is there to enjoy himself and can find time to smile or talk with you the minirail goes right in to some of the pavilions and it was the pavilions we invad ed the first few days the art gallery assembles under one roof outstanding examples from all periods loaned by public and private collections the world over the labyrinth tells the story of man in terms of an ancient greek legend about a mons ter who lived in a labyrinth and until he was slain by the seus ate young men and wo men the films though beau tiful are also frightening by far the most superb him is shown in the telephone pa vilion up to 1200 spectators stand in the centre of a circu lar screen giving one the feel ing of actually being present at outstanding events and scenes from canadian history the indian pavilion shows vividly and accurately the sad plight of the indian people a reproduction of an 18th centennial pastry will go parading nassagawcyas massive sev en foot centennial cake probably the most talked ab out bit of pastry in north walton these past few weeks will represent the township in area parades throughout centennial year it was an nounced officially lamenting the energy pour ed into the construction of the giant now resting in a camp- hjeuville garage council de cided to outfit it on a trailer and transport it to celebrat ions in the county some decorative materials will be strengthened for trans port and weatherresistance but other than that itll be the same old centrepiece that syrribolued what the township can do when festivities are in order council also approved a din ner for centennial committee members at the expense of the township as councils way of saying thanks soloists and south american groups i was personally disappoint ed with both the american and russian pavilions the rus sian was too technical the am erican too much in the strict ly entertainment field not showing enough of their way of living ships from an over the world sail up the st lawr ence to expo and we were able to make a tour of a ger man one the hamburg on monday night we were thrilled by the military tat too it was described as the greatest event of its kind ever staged by canadas armed for ces specially produced for expo in honor of canadas centennial year it tells the mi litary story of the nation and takes a look at its future hopkins arrives back i could fill the paper descri bing the sights and sounds of expo but it has all been writ ten before by people more dis cerning than i some are dis appointed some think the praise is exaggerated some are captivated and enthralled as i was by a visit to expo among our group there were some mishaps students got lost missed the bus and had to take taxis back to the campsite but all in all the program ran smoothly this can be attributed to the coop eration of all participating plus the efficiency and affab ility of thursday june 29 hal- ton county 4h club members parents and friends enjoyed a tour of the ontario school for the deaf in milton conducted by a h britton and j r hun ter as this was a new experi ence for most people present the time was very worth while and instructive at the completion of the tour members moved to the hornby united church where a pot luck supper was served over 100 people were present o hear several 4h and junior farmer members present a musical talent show the pc were the haltonettes ruth and wilma mason and joy havvvard ac companied by mrs george newell doug and ltyle stokes violin and piano ruth and wilma mason on guitar and accordion david austin elec tric guitar carl middlebrook accordion and earl burt vo cal and guitar following the show joy hayward junior farmer provincial director conducted a group sing song mixed volleyball games be tween 4hers and their par ents proved to be competitive and strenuous several mem bers of the kingsway krwanis club
