i v acton district hioh school education complex twentysix teachers staff high school acton district high school board is composed of five mem bers appointed to look- after an education complex which be comes more important and in volves the expenditure of more taxation revenue each year the present board is compos ed of chairman tom watson ap pointee of the public school board chester anderson and ray arblc appointed by coun cil duncan moffat appointed by nassagaweya township council and kerwin mcphail appointed by equesing township council the present modern high school was officially opened on november 22 1964 since the new school was built student en rolment has quadrupled it lakes a staff of 26 teachers and three caretakers to handle the student load but evenjhen the program is limited courses now taught at the school include five years arts and science four year arts and science four year business and commercial special commercial the fiveyear program in aru and science makes provision for pupils of good general ability who desire to proceed to grade 13 a to secure the further ed ucation leading to the secon dary school honor graduation diploma or b to qualify for ad mission to a university course teachers college or to other fur ther studies for which the suc cessful completion of work in grade 13 is required the ourytar program in arts and science is designed to pro vide a wellbalanced secondary school education based on stan dards of curriculum and achieve ment for those pupils possessing good general ability whose par ticular interests it will serve bet ter than one of the alternate pro grams these pupils do not plan to proceed to grade u but wish to obtain a broad general educa tion and to qualify for the sec ondary school graduation diplo ma some of them recognize al to that on the basis of their achievement in earlier grades that the courses of the fouryear program are best suited to their particular abilities and are more likely therefore to enable them to gain success and satisfaction from their studies the fouryear program in bus- iness and commercial provides for pupils who are specially in terested in the study of business and commercial subjects and have the necessary aptitudes an opportunity to obtain both a good secondary school educa tion in basic subjects and the specialized skills that lead to em ployment in commerce and in dustry special commercial course dciyned to fit the graduate for office employment is an inten sive oneyear vocational course based upon an adequate general education pupils who have com pleted grade ii or 12 of any ap proved live year program or grade 12 of a fouryear program are eligible for admission to this course in september ims a diss in driver instruction was establish ed in the school many schools in ontario are now offering the course and more are expected to start offering courses in septem ber a memorandum from the de partment of education and the department of transport em phasises that all courses in driv er nstruction must be held out side regular school hours and must not reduce or interfere with the time allotted to the reg ular subjects in the school cur riculum students who wish to have courses not offered in their home school technical or voca tional courses may take such courses at neighboring schools the board will pay for tuition but not for transportation ab out 40 students from this dis trict arc now attending george town or guelph a p which is felt here m acton and in other schools is an apathetic attitude toward studies we find all too often that capable students fail to ach ieve their potential for fear of having an accusing finger point ed at them by some of their more vocal and indolent class mates many are satisfied just to scrape bv with a minimum of ef fort and reproach anyone jwho does a conscientious job this attitude is dangerous because it teaches students to develop hab its of laziness which culminate in failure as a result of a survey of grad uates for the past 10 years it was discovered that no student parsed grade 13 in one year who had less than 66 per cent aver age in either grade 11 or 12 sim ilarly no student ever obtained a grade 13 diploma in one year who had less than 75 per cent in grade 9 these facts point out that no one regardless of his ability has been able in a short time to de velop good work habits even if such a person is able to develop a healthy attitude toward stud ies his inadequate knowledge of previous work maltes success close to impossible results show that those stu dents who learn to work hard early in secondary school are abk to continue successfully such students furthermore do not exemplify a declining aver age throughout their high school work we refuse to allow students who are obviously not working to remain in school in most asesl parents have been entirely cooperative in such instances and we have been able to affect a satisfactory change in attitude although the reorganized pro gram entices more people to stay in school longer it definite ly does not permit students to attend school without working under our former system of secondary education many of this group of people became dis couraged and dropped out of school they were forced to study subjects which were too difficult or uninteresting to them and in the face of poor achieve ment students left school with a grudge against society and a negative attitude toward educa tion there is a propensity for discouraged or disinterested stu dents to create difficulties in classroom and to drop out of school before becoming suffic iently mature to benefit an em ployer the reorganized program of ontario secondary schools helps lo overcome this problem by al lowing students of average or below average intelligence into a course which will permit him lo be successful in many cases this has provedi to be a method of replacing failure with accomplishment it allows us to graduate relatively mature self confident people from grade 12 at the age of 17 or 18 who would otherwise have left school with a disgruntled attitude several years earlier there is no patented method of leading each human being to personal success however the school intends to do the best possible with the equipment and personnel which it has at its dis posal the staff of acton district high school service within the town i enlarge acton opp it is the second alternative that acton chose many years ago under the existing contract with the opp acton has a six man police force under veteran corp ray mason looking after police work in acton by choosing to operate under contract with the opp the ma jor benefit gained by the town would appear to be a less expen sive form of police protection free from local interference in its exercise of duties pins the additional benefit of being in tegrated with a provincewide in terconnected organization another advantage to being under contract with the opp is that the special services and fac ilities if the provincial police are immediately available through their radio link with ontario headquarters which is intercon nected with all police
