jft 7h adoo fr pr wedndy july 5 1967 f lisnt s kjriuf look into crystal ball parks recreation expansion in acton can you visualize a part stretching cram the band hall 00 wallace ave following the coarse of the school creek all the way to fairy lake if you can youre tuned in to the same wave length as parks and recreation chairman john goy and his committee this is part of his projection for the wears ahead tw year for the first time acton scrapped the previous two board recreation committee and board of parks management system of running recreation and parks in its place are still two boards with die same func- on but they are composed of the same members instead of a five man parks board and 10 member recreation committee doing business which often overlapped there are sev- en people handling both sets of books and expediting business which previously occupied 15 a success it has done away with many of the unwieldy things and the overlapping but only time will tell the story the new boards is headed by john goy with brendan aherne as vicechairman and since hes the only former parks board member he is also head of parks development other members are helen qtterbein hugh patterson two council ap- pointees earl masales and ted tyler jr and a member yet to be named he or she will re place harold townsley who re signed to take the fulltime posi tion of arena and parks manag er one very much in keeping with the present setup when art cooper resigned as secretarytreasurer the boarcus were fortunate to secure har olds wife doris to take the va cancy thus giving a man and wife team the job of running arena and parks helping with both sides also axe frank thompson don price and tom mckeown the latter lor the summer only again this method of running the parks and recreation pro gram ii a new wrinkle imposed more or less by the frequency with which recreation directors came and went chairman goy freely admits the new system is an experiment but he has every hope it will be jback to the parks program the board expects the new glen- lea park win be completed this year aid be in ate it is pre- early tderfoing esieasive work and of comae farther develop wjb foopw as the money a bao mmmma has been con structed and the board hopes residents will be able to use the park as tbe present prospect park is used both as a pleasant garden spot and for recreation the program of developing glenka park was conceived by the previous parks board it is interesting to note the board hoped to hold an official open ing in conjunction with canadas centennial celebration this year centte of most activity for the parks end of the committee which wears two hats is of course the present prospect park prospects for prospect will hinge a lot on the present cleaning of fairy lake which is being done by conservation au thorities in conjunction with the government it is rrpffred many of the low spots will be filled by the silt which comes from the bottom of the lake after the job is done the committee will have a much clearer idea of what they can do present facilities include a wading pool a beach on the lake which has just been renovated diamonds for baseball softball under lights and the community centre which bouses diverse ac tivities like roller skating la crosse dancing movies wrest ling shows and of course hock ey curling and skating from oc tober to may there are excel lent facilities and fairy lake is renowned for its fishing the park has also been the home of acton fall fair since 1913 and this tbe centennial year is going to be a four day extrava- ganza which will be the hub of actons centennial celebrations the community centre or the arena as it is known is also due for a facelifting as soon as funds are available the recreation end of the committee would like to see the present walls and seats replaced by sturdier con crete structures and the intro duction of heat for frigid winter activities these renovations will likely be a two stage development half done one year and tbe rest the next this year an engineer has been engaged to draw up plans and specifications for the work chairman goy estimates it only costs residents of acton about two dollars per capita per year for its extensive recreation program this figure is based in a survey over the past six years and mr goy feels the cost is well worth it first time since the recreation committee hired jim casburn as its first the committee feels a recrea tion program can continue un der its own auspices since there is a variety for almost every in terest running from hockey soft- bail curling badminton shut- fleboard swimming to golden age club activities the summer playground is a mecca for youngsters from ac- ton and district this years is being run by elizabeth atkey and her staff at two locations the park and m z bennett school grounds when the new glenlea park is finished it is quite likely the action will be switched from the school the green beb visualized by chairman gov from fairy lake to the band hall it could be a reality but these projects are a long time con suming process the idea is there and it will take coopera tion from many groups to make it a reality john goy chairman ap green refractories 1mb year the town is without a recreation director for the canada ltd acton ontar 10 canadas most complete refractory
