grade hght robert uttie school ntennial grade eight banquet honors graduating students eightysix grade eight stu dents were part of a glittering centennial banquet in the rdb- ert little school auditorium last wednesday night prom both the robert little and m z bennett school the students accepted awards gave gifts and led a fond fare well to teachers who shepher ded them through their years of public school then they heard an after dinner address by assistant high school prin cipal j r bray on the tran sition to high school and the difference it could make in in dividual lives there was also a skit which lampooned teaching methods of 100 years ago when the ven erable robert little tried to pound some knowledge into the village dullards the eve ning concluded with dancing to the latest rock music while participating parents looked fondly at sons garbed in their best suits and daughters wear ing their best dresses for the occasion prepared and served by mothers of the grade eight stu dents convened by mrs allen ellerby dinner was preceded by a toast to the queen led by david rochester a poised and capable master of ceremonies robert ellerby said grace dinner was followed by a sing song with music supervi sor glen banks at the piano and robert little viceprinci pal doug copeland urging the students to sing headline song was the catchy canada written by bobby gimly which drew two encores portraying the school prin cipal sam hubble had the pointed pointer taste of con- tolling a room full of huck finn characters and sweet beckys taking part besides sann were carol patterson diane frank and sheila cal- lett in old fashioned dresses trevor swan randy coker and tim coles the raggedy ruffians of the robert little classroom of a century- ago the traditional parting gifts to the schools were presented by m z bennetts carolyn thompson and robert littles kenny marshall on behalf of the graduates school board chairman o chapman accepted the gifts on behalf of the schools and pre sented the imperial oil trophy for interschoof field day to the m z bennett school lynne dunn accepted the m z bennett school also won the interschool sports trophy and craig weldon accepted the trophy from mr chapman toast to the schools was proposed by dave manes academic awards for the highest standing in their re- vice principal j bray speaks to grade eights spective schools went to caro lyn thompson of the m z bennett school and carol pat terson of robert little mrs j h foley presented the le gion ladies auxiliary trophies to the two graduates carol is the daughter of mr and mrs russell patterson carolyns parents are mr and mrs ray thompson iooe awards for the stu dents showing the most pro- gress during the year went to david bittorf of the robert little school and mark wolfe of m z bennett mrs e lid- kea regent of the duke of de vonshire chapter of the io- de made the presentations and congratulate both boys on the achievement appreciation to the grade eight mothers was given toy leona synnott and replied to by convener mrs allan eller by on behalf of the ladies who waited on tables and cooked the appetizing roast turkey dinner guest speaker j r bray was introduced by robert krul with a dash of sunshine and thanked by mark neilsen head table guests carolyn thompson o chapman dave manes bob krul j r bray r ellerbv mrs y foley m wolfe mrs e lidkea carol patterson and david bittorf were introduced by david rochester those graduating from the m z bennett school were anne bagger david braida margaret churchill katharine cook changes in bridg ing the gap between element ary and high school were sec ondary to the change in them selves mr bray was speaking at the annual banquet in the robert little auditorium wednesday night he explained the significance of the latin verb uoin which the word adolescent comes as to kindle or burn and drew a picture tor graduates ot what theyd be like in high school he said alter they had reach ed grade nine the students will hardly associate with those from grade eijjht the pattern would repeat itsclt as they weht higher in school theres nothing wrong with this said mr bray its all part of growing up most students when they finish grade eight dont think they know everything but fig ure hey know everything worth knowing using socrates and william davics as guides he told the students to like the arts and encourage crafts appreciate nature look cor responsibility and have a well educated mind not dwelling on one topic but many he cited the advantage of an organized schedule to profit studies and urged stu dents to feel a desire for adven ture never before in history has so much emphasis been put on education the speaker contin ued you will soon be joining the adult world and by the looks of things we can use all the help you can give us mr bray postulated a ques tion after describing the race for the moon by two major powers what will be over come first the technical prob lems ir social problems like racial segregation the speaker told students the everyday social problems were just as important as the technical ones a significant and meaning ful place in the world is only possible with a sound educa tion mr bray emphasized you are united tonight but it will be the last occasion dif ferences will quickly set you apart the speaker said people with intelligence and conscientious ness will always be in demand he urged students not to rob themselves be concerned about developing their minds and nuture a sense of caring mr bray concluded his talk by reminding his audience he had great faith in them and encouraged them to make the best possible use of their tal ents olltls carolyn thompson left andcarol patterson were top grade eight students at the m z bennett and robert little schools respectively and received awards from the legion ladies auxiliary at wednesdays grade eight banquet stud ents making the most progress through the
