acton ontario dear sir it would be highly appreci ated if you may publish this letter which may be consider ed an exemption of the rule because generally letters to ed itors ask for taking action in some direction and this al ways costs money whereas this one is written for the pur pose of discontinuing an ex pensive operation carried out at fairvlew cemetery this cemetery has a few small swamps providing a flora and fauna which make it quite different from other places of burial it is alive with natures colors sounds shapes and movements it has life and it has beauty if those swamps are eliminated by fill ing it will be as dull and life less as the others are and gaining a few more plots does not seem to justify such delib erate destruction of natural beauty these filling opera tions require expensive mach inery and labor and their ef fect is devastating conse quently it appears highly de sirable to discontinue them im mediately this suggestion may be com pleted by two others of minor importance 1 1 would be use ful to have some receptacles for refuse on the grounds be cause rifiht now visitors can not help littering the swamps with cmpt flower pots flow er wrapping paper etc since thev cannot do anything else with them it also would be desirable to erect a few signs prohibiting children from en tering the grounds unless ac companied bv adults acton is well provided with play- grounds for children and there is absolutely no need for them to play ball games in the cemetery or to do jumping exercises on the monuments these tvto suggestions may be connected with some small ex penditures but these would amount to a tiny fraction of the present filling expenses only trusting that you may grant me an opportunity jo gain your readers attention by pub lishing this monday afternoon to see how far down the 16 mile creek they could float in an army surplus rubber raft just large enough to hold the two men six hours and several chilly damp spills later they tele phoned their wives from down town oakville to come and bring them home after a wet oneway trip the estimated 15 miles by raft they had decided against attempting to float back upstream to their home town on tannery i read in vour paper last week that the chief chemist of beardmorc ltd is to take a trip to the far north to check on the possibilities of starting up a tannery there i suppose it would be too much to hope for that the ac ton tannery be moved up there together with its effluv ium on second thought its hardly fair to the eskimos and other northern inhabitants to have their beautiful fresh clear arctic air befouled by the kind of miasma that dribbles into mv bedroom at four oclock on a warm still sum mer morning making me in mv halfawake state think that i somehow have fallen into a sewer m title i was asleep to be serious i hope that if a lannerv auuallv is built in the north the problems of air pollution will have been overcome then perhaps the chief chemist can have much to be proud of in their county museum located at kelso park the antiquity of its contents can be doubly appreciated in that they are housed in a 97- vearold barn which sets them off to best advantage to have placed them in a modern type building would certainly have put thearticle- displayed out of context with the age in which they belong t the tremendous amount of labor involved in the restora tion of the present building is a monument to those respon sible for this canadian show case with further buildings con templated to house the ancient relics there will be an oppor tunity for residents of this county to make donations of articles which will be well ta ken care of and will be a me mento to the donor for future generations to view with pride the museum is not asking for
