internationally- minded family award if there was one would automatically go to past international ys mens president gw pat mckenxle aad his wile mary their wide circle of friends and acquaintances girdles the globe and encompasses peoples of almost every nationality and race recently a dutch couple mr and mrs jan dejong visit ed them at their home on jeffrey avenue this week the mckentles back from the 13rd international ys mens convention at green lake wlsconslnentertalnedra- mon pasicolan from manila in the philllplnes for two days on his first trip to the united states and canada mr pasicolan was a delegate at the convention he is on his way to expo and to visit a daughter whos a doctor at john hopkins the hospital in baltimore maryland he has five other children at home coincidence s have a way of popping up in international rela tionships raymon a tall fili pino from a country of small men recalls pat mckenzie as sumed the international presid ing the same year he was elect ed president of his club in man ila there was another coincidence when pat mckenzie brought out a plaque presented to him by the philliplne delegation after his inauguration in 1964 mr pasic olan pointed to it and delightedly told the mckentles he had pick ed it and its accompanying gavel out himself mr pasicolanpronouncedlike pepsl cola a nickname he was quickly clubbed at the convention is tie owner and proprietor of a bookstore in manila which ca ters primarily to university stu dents he explained textbooks which cost 5 in the unitedstates could be reprinted by the japan ese and sold for as little as 250 in japan or the philllplnes where most instruction is in english the paper may be coarser the cover only paperback but the contents are the same and thats what were interested in he told the free press reporter universities in the philllplnes have morning afternoon and ev ening classes and have enrol ments of 30000 to 35000 stud ents mr pasicolan was not impressed consequently when a university he visited in califor nia pointed boastfully to an en rolment of 1000 he consider ed education in the philllplnes although a poor country was equal to anything in the worlds advanced countries elementary and high school education is free in philllplnes cities but when you go to the pro vinces only elementary educa tion is provided by the govern ment after world war two the phil llplnes had a problem with youths trained only to fight the japan ese who continued fo ravage the civilian population after the en emy left he told of the work done to reeducate these people filipinos are quick to forgive mr mckonile reminded his vis itor after the war and the fric tion with jap invaders at the first asian ys mens conference it was a pbllllplne delegate who welcomed a japanese delegation of ys men to the conference in manila extending the hand of friendship mr pasicolan attributes much of the impetus for charitable work in the philllplnes to ys mens ideals and to the cosells- tas anerganlaatlon which holds a cram counsel in religion and is designed to help tbeparishpriest in their work the visitor saw no incongruity in being a cathol ic and a ys man like most ys men from the philupines the r shortage of paristt priests finds them participating very actively in parish activities mr pasicolan light brown in color didnt blink an eye when his host asked about his colour he compared different racial co lors to bread the whites he said are not cooked the black ones are burnt but the brown loaves are just right thats us filipinos he laughed average temperatures in the philupines run from 80 degrees to 85 but the thermometer often rises to 110 its considered cold when the mercury dips to 65 degrees he poined to the asphalt in the mckenxle drive way and said they couldnt use this type of road top at home it would melt roads are con structed of nonmelting cement the population of the philu pines has risen from 2 million after the war to the present 33 million diet there now includes more protein which is helping to wipe out the traditional image of the small man from the philu pines mr pasicolan remarked oh the lack of bars on international convention is the centennial tartan staff photo classroom jr- r ii a startling and proven fact one classroom of high school students is wiped out every week because of car accidents it is an unbearable statistic but true more young canadians are killed in automobile accidents than by any other cause young drivers as a group are involved in more automobile accidents than any other drivers this is the simple reason insurance rates are higher for them we in the automobile insurance industry pro vide training courses bursaries and technical assistance to high school instructors to help them teach safe driving to iheir students students who pass approved high school driver training courses earn lower insurance premiums at present only 14 of high schools across canada have these driver training courses parents teachers just ask yourselves must a classroom be wiped out next week you can help prevent such tragedies by sup porting driver training programmes in your community all
