october 17 six candidates in campaign in halton east halton west tuesdays announcement that a provincial election will be held on tuesday october 17 signalled the start of preelection activities in haltons two new ridings halton east and halton west six anxious candidates one each for the liberals progress ive conservatives and new dem ocratic party in each halton riding have been grooming themselves and their supporters for an election for several months now as soon as the official word was out the election machinery began to go into gear halton was almost split down the middle by the redistribution of ridings announced a year ago last february burlington nassa- gaweya township acton and the uppermost 10 lots in esquesing township lots23to32 inclusive or everything north of no 22 free press plates third best allround competition the free press added another honor to a long list of prizes chalked up through years in canadian newspaper competitions this week in ottawa publisher david dills will accept a certificate from the canadian weekly nowspapers association awarding the free press third place in the best allround news paper competition in class four the portage la prairie mani toba portage leader stood first in the competition which encom passes weekly newspapers from across canada the burlington ont gazette was the only other county paper to win an award the gait from october 2nd tci october 7th 1967 there will be 12 lectures on six evenings for the one week course which will be attended by social science students mun icipal officials and employees businessmen prospective coun cillors housewives farmers and professional people the course will cover a broad area of waterloo and wellington counties proximate to the city of gait three previous courses have been sponsored by the ontario conference on local govern ment the first was held in peter borough for this area in the fall of 1966 and the next two in the brantford and st catherines ar september 14 stores wiu remain odm trow 9 am until 9 pm and special sidewalk sales will be conducted at most places participating merchants are staging special sales being ad vertised in the acton free press each week and customers receive coupons offering them a chance on five valuable lucky prizes the prizes will be drawn on the friday night of the fair total loot to be won is valued over 500 which includes a lazy- boy chair set of five mounted car tires a portable transistor radio a vacuum cleaner outfltand a set of luggage downtown merchants are de corating store windows in the old fashioned theme as well as dressing up for the occasion this week the acton free press is running a special section to include advertising for partic ipating merchants only to make it easier for
