the litter nuuance editorially the editor of the george town herald agrees with a recent letter from a reader complaining about the litter on georgetown streets although he stopped short in naming georgetown as perhaps the dirtiest town west of toronto he agreed the debris certain ly puts us in the running for top hon ors anyone who has seen actons busi ness section early in the morning before lownworkrnen have swept up- will agree our own streets put us up with the front runners too wrappers cig arette packets kleenex banana peel orange skins and tin cans are thrown willynilly into gutters and on sidewalks creating an impression of untidiness whicrj can only leave a bad taste in the eyes of visitors littering is not a problem confined to georgetown and acton its almost universal in countries where packaging material is made of paper the coun tryside suffers almost as much with garbage cluttering natural beauty spots and being dumped on the roadside what can be done about this pig like practice which is befouling both town and country alike asks the oril- lia packet and times the worst lirterbugs are children and teenagers principally because they consume mst of the packaged confec tions canned pop and gum wrappers which make up much of the carelessly thrown litter they are inclined to be heedless and untidy they are not the only offenders by any means we have seen men and women toss cigarette boxes beer bot tles and other types of garbage out car windows ol merely drop them right where they ate standing one policeman of our acquaintance thinks every town should have a bylaw officer to curb littering and enforce it with stiff fines he suggests a few fines would curb much of the indiffer ence exhibited now others see education as the chief means of stopping the litterbugs with special emphasis on the problem in the elementary schools in acton the littering could be cut down considerably with a few attrac tive looking trash bins located in strate gic points along the business section this would be a worthwhile project for a service club interested in improv ing the towns appearance editorial page on the jcath jftcte continuing the travelogue we start ed last week of a vacation trip to expo and massachusetts well begin where we left off what is known as the south shore of the state one of the oldest settled places in north america the south shore includes to town of plymouth reputed to be and marked by a large rock the place where the pilgrim fathers landed it is still easy to trace their influence in the quaint houses picturesque towns and winding country lanes massachusetts is alive with history almost every crossroads has some sig nificance in the settlement indian or revolutionary wars of the infant united states theres where john alden lived a house built in 1655 at duxbury theres the miles standish monument john adams one of the first presidents lived here indians made their last attack on weymouth there king philips path is the route used by an indian chief with that name to attack the settlements theres a house built in 1632 we could go on indefinitely all the roads in that part of the state are paved often the country roads are lined on either side by hed ges almost like a part of england trans planted in the new world if you like sea food you are in a gourmets paradise you havent really tasted products from the sea until you have had thero freshly caught and cook ed harbors often covered with fishing and pleasure craft still retain their at traction for the inlander we found them fascinating with the added spec tacle of outgoing and incoming tides aauch of the areas recreation is fash ioned around the sea 1 massachusetts has been the spawn ing grounds for many poets and writ ers theyve left literature appreciated all over the world it is a milieu meant for the artist the rocky coast and inland ponds leading to the beautiful berk shire mountains i although the south shore below boston retains much of the past it is very much alive to the future with ex pressways and modern shopping cen tres testifying to the areas prosperity the natives if you have the temeri ty to call these new englanders such are friendly very much like their sur roundings many portugese and italian families live where once only anglo- saxon settled they adapt to their new countrys customs and tranquility add ing a dimension of their own within a few miles of one another peculiarly are acton milton and georgetown while oakville isnt too far off in connecticut cditoriat wte those from rapidly turned to putty if it is possible for putty to ache like a bad tooth we took off right after church last sun day as usual rightafterchurch grad ually turned into 3 pm drove iso miles stayed with sisterinlaw long time no see big palaver until 3 am bogged another 20o through the heat to alexandria near montreal where old bud dy the man from glengarry generous joyous gene macdonald had offered free two motel rooms for as long as we wanted swift tour of ancient interesting town drink at golf club dinner at the macdonalds same story longumenosee etc over flowing hospitality even to tall dark and handsome 16yearold son neil to enter tain our kim estimated departure time 10 pm actual departing time 230 am up bright and early and off at the crack of noon fortunately as gene had prom ised it was only an hours drive from ex po became biggest joke of trip he ob viously meant by jet or straight across- country my car goes better on highways just follow the expo signs it sail we did we completely surrounded the city of montreal and wound up in a parking lot which was a 30mlnute ferry ride from ex po the regular lots are five to ten min utes from the grounds the ferry cost 150 a person the other lots provide a free bus the ferry dumped us at the wrong end of expo just ten miles from where we wanted to be at 330 pm we were at expo never mind we finally picked up my press pass the press building was a little bit of heaven airconditioned food and drink reasonable slightly relieved and just about the time i had thought wed be heading tor home we started out to do expo off the cuff actons grand old lady miss m 2 bennett has moved from town after a soiourn here of over 60 years many in town and district will remember her influence in their lives even though she is not here to personify the high ideals she set over a longiand disting uished teaching career softball fans werent particularly surprised to see the station hotel team win the town league championship for the second straight seaspn but there was some eyelid lifting when they did it in four straight games congratula tions both to the winners and runners up as always with our family there were no plans no organization we went into the first building we saw it was the internat ional broadcasting building fascinating perhaps for an engineer for us it was slightly less absorbing than a visit to the local library the fighting began here kim is at the age whenrhe abhors being dragged around by her parents her first proposal was lets split and meet somewhere would you turn loose your 16yearold chick in a crowd of 300000 in an area the size of a large city when none of us had a clue about how to get back to the ferry so we sulked our way through the tele phone building its a dandy show and it w he that i first discovered that my press pass made aladdins lamp look like an old candle butt i just took it out and kissed it as i write see there are these 7000 people lined up about four abreast for a quartermile with a press pass you walk to the head of the line flash the pass and your party is admitted at the reserved entrance imm ediately along with people in wheelchairs and comas and other conditions the first time we did it we felt like real skunks i expected the enraged types in the lineup to scream and rave or threaten to tear us to pieces nothing happened the second time i felt like charles de gaulle after that i lost all compunction for the standees and began looking for pavilions with the longest lineups for the sheer pleasure of gatecrashing such is man russian pavilion next beautiful lineup pavilion was rather like a vast department store specializing in spacetravel equip ment my wife collapsed into a chair on the third floor and a number of people thought she was having a stroke by sheer good luck we found oas way home and hurtled that one hour from expo in only 2 12 hours after missing the turnoff to alex and wandering about the wilds of eastern
