a proposal from a conciliation board to end thtf yearlong dis pute councillors were unanimous in approving the new contract the terms of the agreement came out of a meeting two weeks ago when the conciliation board and repre sentative from the health nurses and county council staged a 14- hour marathon meeting deter mined to come up with an equit able agreement the judge judge colin ben nett of grey county who chaired the conciliation board was very fair and there was a lot of co operation that day reeve aust in ledwlth of hilton told coun cillors both sides had to give a little but we ended up with an agreement that is fair to both sides the contract gives public heal- the nurses salaries ranging from 5350 to 6550 and registered nurses 4800 to5800 beginning october 1 and public health nur ses 5617 to 96817 and regist ered nurses 5040 to 6040 at january 1 1968 it runs from october 1 to dec ember 31 1968 the contract is described as giving the nurses a 19 per cent increase in salary plus two additional statuatory holidays each year the contract covers such topics as vacations grievance methods association dies arbitration car and uni form allowance seniority leave ot absense illness allowance and sets their hours of work at 35 per week the nurses are happy and the personnel committee is happy deputyreeve frank rogers burlington told the council de putyreeve charles menefy mil ton congratulated the negotiating committee for working out an equitable agreement the dispute with the nurses began with a request tor collect tvw bargaining and erupted into a mass walkout by the staff last fall after at month off work they returned on the promise an agreement wowld be worked out but meanwhile the county health unit was greyssted and nurses across the province were urged to refuse work bare negotiations bogged down earl ier this year when the nurses at tempted to work oat an agree ment with the oowatys negotiat ing committee finally a con ciliation board was agreed upon the greylisting was dropped a few weeks ago later in the same meeting of county council members learned in a report from the board ot health the nursing complement of 30 had dropped to 13 full time and three parttime nurses there had been 24 on staff when the trouble broke out last year and services were being per formed councillors also approved a contract with the guards at the halton county jail in milton ef fective retroactive to july 19 and running for two years the guards received an increase of approximately 19 per cent or 600 to 4800 with five annual increments of 20 in july of 1968 the starting salary will be upped to 5000 with five annual increments of 220 this agreement has worked out in just three meetings and warden william coulter report ed
