macdonalds and mrs donald uacdonald introduced customs port reports jump in revenue first six months of the fiscal year for acton customs port has resulted in another recordentry customs officer murray harri son reports this week entries were up slightly over the same period last year 1315 to 1302 but revenue took a ug jump last years revenue for the period was 11361287 this year the total jumped to 160 91815 a rise of 4730528 mr harrison attributes the steady expansion of business in the port to the increased produc tivity of local industry present government ont towards people in results ina delay in freight service like express im alarmed freight might become the same thing as express it is unfortunate i feel the province should develop com muter train service and the freight industries for the acton area may be reluctant to settle here because of lack of proper rail facilities i would be happy to work with dr barley to do every thing possible to get the cnr to change its decision and keep the station open by 71 vote council strongly objects to closing of cnr station committee of adjustment rejects rubin applications applications ofthe rubin corp oration were discussed at great length at mondays meeting of the committee of adjustment b amaxed the committee that a builder can apply for a building permit in the town of acton and than go ahead and build a house any way he thinks fit tae committee also wondered why a home can be built and com pletely flnisbed before a variance application is presented to the committee summing up the committee felt they are being nsed for no less than a clearing house or other peoples mistakes or ex ample the builder in closing the committee was of the onaoimoais opinion that they had no other choice but to reject the rubin smith was the only member absent acton council voted 71 thurs day rilght to prepare a very strong objection based on our needs to the proposed closing of the canadian national railway station in acton lone objection was raised by councillor ted tyler jr who at first considered declaring a con nect of interest but was dissuad ed by fellow councillors and the mayor who declared small towns in the course of the year often produced cases which bordered on conflict of interest mr tyler registered his nay declaring that support of the motion would be almost like sub sidizing his own opposition he is in the truck freight business with tyler transport ltd councillor bob drinkwalter raised the rail issue during thursdays enquiries declaring he was concerned about the art icle in the free press whats going to become of our town it will be a hard blow to our local industries we shouldnt be too long taking an active stand regarding our feeling on this said mr drinkwalter mayor les duby said his con cern was very real too but he wondered why council wasnt not ified as soon as the free press he charged the change would ser iously change actons appeal for industry councillor tyler enquired of councillor perry who has the dis tinction of wearing two hats station agent and councillor if the proposed shutdown would really change things much mr perry answeredthe mayor first he had he told the mayor asked the cnr s public rela tions man tbe same question and received no answer for mr tyler be reserved the choicest news the new master agency at the cn jl would mean the railway proposes representative councillor pat mckenzle urged council to object to the closing strongly if what has happened to express is what is going to happen to the freight then were in very poor condition reeve hinton agreed object very strongly through the mem ber of parliament to maintain this facility in acton were on a line in the golden horseshoe it could eventually produce a go- go transit system on the other hand said the reeve youve got to give credit to the cnr as a public support ed system for doing objectively what they are to solve economic problems in a moderntransport- afjon system in my opinion the express system as far as we are con cerned is excellent lfr hinton continued all in a 50 mile rad ius will benefit out of the way places will benefit acton may lose others will win councillor perry thought the reeve exaggerated about express service now he maintained it was much better when it operated locally the poh of council swung to councillor earl masales whofett the railway might look into en gaging the reeve as a publicity deputy reeve fg oakes said he could talk on and on about the poor express service its so bad we ignore it he told council he said
